Yesterday, I was mentoring a young Black professional who asked me, "How did you find the courage to be the only one in the room?" I shared how knowing our history, knowing how many brilliant Black minds overcame far greater obstacles gives me strength. We're standing on the shoulders of giants, and now we're building platforms for others to stand on. Remember: Every meeting you lead, every project you complete, every mentee you guide – these are all threads in the rich tapestry of Black Irish history we're weaving together. Attended an interesting talk last Monday held by The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) (virtually during our break) -- "Black History Month: Celebrating Innovators" The theme of this year’s Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives,” marking a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture - it was interesting to hear from the change makers on the panel on their experiences. One of the thoughts from panelist Skinder Hundal - we need to create environments where there is the opportunity for creativitity then put it into a structure that drives it forward - to be a creative being and an entrepreneur as well is key..... There are structural syetms at play that we need to enable our collectives or enterprises to flourish.... it needs guidance, good mentors, and good investment. Cities and locations should consider this and offer policies and cultural investment for that flow to happen and process to kick in. Did you know that there are more than 1.5 million Black Canadians who represent over 300 different ethnic or cultural origins? February is Black History Month, and this year’s theme is "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build." Since the early 1600’s, Black people have been on the land now known as Canada; yet Black History Month was not established until 2008.  Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultures, rich heritage, and countless contributions of Black Canadians, and to learn about their legacies and histories. As we approach #BlackHistoryMonthUK, it's time for organisations to go beyond performative gestures and truly engage with the mission of reclaiming the Black narrative. This year, we have the opportunity to create space to celebrate Black excellence, both past and present, while challenging outdated narratives. I was reminded of this recently at #TheBrillianceSummit hosted by the phenomenal Madeline McQueen, an event that still lives rent-free in my mind. From the power of connection to Denise Nurse’s unforgettable hosting (shoes off on stage, boss entrance to Beyoncé!), it was a refreshing space where we could BE and truly feel seen. Then at the #BlackBusinessMagazine Gala, I witnessed Dr. Tru Powell and Justice Williams MBE shine a light on some of the most brilliant Black businesses—leaders who are not only excelling but building profitable, impactful ventures. It was a powerful reminder that Black history is not just about the past; it’s about the innovation and brilliance happening right now. As we welcome the start of October, it is a moment to celebrate and reflect on the significant contributions of Black individuals to the UK’s rich history and culture. Black History Month serves as a reminder that Black history is British history, and recognising it is essential in fostering understanding, unity, and progress. For organisations and businesses, marking this month goes beyond a one day celebration; it is about taking tangible steps toward creating an inclusive environment. It is a time to reflect on how far we’ve come in ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion, but more importantly, to assess how far we still have to go.
