Indigenous People’s Day: Growing up in Australia, I experienced a time and place where the rich history of Indigenous peoples wasn’t a focal point. Today, being Indigenous People’s Day, I took the opportunity to delve into the histories, cultures, and contributions of the Indigenous peoples in New England, USA, where I now reside. If you’re curious about the Indigenous history of your area, a great resource to start with is Native Land : https://native-land.ca

As we step into June, I would like to take a moment to recognize and celebrate National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This month provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the rich history, heritage, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across the country. At TESC, we are committed to fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and understanding. Our work often brings us into communities with deep Indigenous roots, and it is our responsibility to honor and respect their traditions and contributions. This month, I encourage each of you to take the time to learn more about the diverse cultures, languages, and histories of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Here are a few ways we can actively engage in National Indigenous History Month: 1. Education and Awareness: Participate in events, workshops, and seminars that focus on Indigenous history and culture. There are numerous online resources and local events available that can broaden our understanding and appreciation. 2. Supporting Indigenous Businesses: Where possible, let’s make a conscious effort to support Indigenous-owned businesses and services. This is a meaningful way to contribute to the economic empowerment of Indigenous communities. 3. Reflect and Respect: Reflect on the land acknowledgments and the significance behind them. Understanding the history of the land we work on and the traditional custodians can deepen our respect and connection to the communities we serve. 4. Community Engagement: Engage with local Indigenous communities through volunteer work or by participating in community events. Exactly 14 years ago today, Saltmedia was manifested into existence. Today 14 years ago business planning started, by the end of the year our first business Saltmedia had officially launched. My life and business partner Alex Saltman walked with me every step of the way. I have always been the face of our businesses, the relationship builder, the sales and account manager, and the marketer, and it has been a journey to grow into having a supportive team that helps with.... everything. In the beginning, I never promoted being Indigenous. I thought it would be bad for business. I never spoke about or promoted being an Indigenous-owned business until I was the first in my city to win the Eagle Feather award from our local Chamber of Commerce, which was in 2015. I had mixed feelings about that award. 2015 was a big year. We also launched our second business, IT Horizons, specializing in IT Managed Services. We started with four partners and, over time, bought them out. Fast forward to today. My team and I are proud to be the majority female and Indigenous-owned businesses! How things change. As I prepare to create a new business plan for Saltmedia Inc., I have been reflecting on our journey and what we learned along the way. What do we want to do for the next year, 15 years, and 100 years? What do we do really well? How do we want to do it? Most importantly, revisiting why we are doing it. I am so grateful to have obtained my Master of Business Administration, which specializes in Indigenous business leadership. It validates how different colonial business practices can be from the way that many Indigenous folks run and manage their businesses, with sustainability and uplifting others at the top of their minds. Huge thanks to my team, Saltmedia, and IT Horizons for all you did and all you do! I am excited for the future.
🌟 Celebrate Indigenous History Month! 🌟 June is a perfect time to honour the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada. Saltmedia and IT Horizons are proud to be woman-owned Certified Indigenous Businesses. We believe that uplifting and collaborating with other Indigenous businesses and Nations is an important step towards Economic Reconciliation. This day (June 1) is also the day that Angie and Alex started building Saltmedia. And they’re now owners of two respected businesses – Saltmedia and IT Horizons. Congratulations to Angie and Alex on all the good things you’ve accomplished in the past 14 years! Note: The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) has a helpful resource that provides an overview of Indigenous economic history: https://lnkd.in/gPEcET-h

🌿 Honoring National Indigenous History Month in So-Called Canada 🌿 As we welcome the month of June, we at Lakota Small Farms acknowledge the importance of National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This is a time to celebrate, learn from, and pay respect to the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures that have shaped Turtle Island since time immemorial. This month, we encourage everyone to reflect on the resilience, wisdom, and contributions of Indigenous communities in so-called Canada and worldwide. Engage with their stories, learn about their cultures, and actively support their struggles for justice and self-determination. It's crucial to recognize that the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada is marked by centuries of colonialism, oppression, and cultural genocide. From the residential school system to the ongoing issues of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, the impacts of these injustices continue to be felt today. However, amidst adversity, Indigenous communities have persevered and continue to fight for their rights, languages, and traditions. This month, let us amplify Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and work towards true reconciliation and decolonization. Join us in honoring National Indigenous History Month by committing to learning, allyship, and action. Attend local events, support Indigenous-owned businesses, and educate yourself and others about the ongoing struggles and triumphs of Indigenous peoples in so-called Canada + worldwide.

Asians, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians have a rich history and cultural heritage that is often ignored in the U.S. Unfortunately, when stories are retold about AANHPI communities and experiences, they tend to center on hardship and exclusion. Parks and monuments must reflect the U.S.’ diversity and chronicle the past more honestly and inclusively—including the achievements of AANHPI people. Public lands should also address the ongoing impacts of colonization, dispossession and cultural erasure on these communities (and distinguish between and among different cultures). Here are some of the parks and historic sites that preserve and share the stories of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people and communities in this country.
Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander history is alive in these 10 parks and other sites
