Additionally, Tom was gifted a JUNO in 1992 while managing the group Tracey Prescott and Lonesome Daddy, who were honoured as Country Group of the Year. In addition to his accomplishments in radio, Tom served on the CCMA Board of Directors for 15 years, including two terms as President from 1991-92 and 1994-2000. His leadership and vision were instrumental in advancing the growth of the Canadian country music industry, which he held dear throughout his life. SOCAN welcomes the federal government’s recent move to increase the Canada Music Fund. Earlier this week, Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge announced a renewal and boost of support for the Canada Music Fund to support Canada’s music industry and artists. Over the next two years, the Government of Canada will provide $32 million to further initiatives aimed at enhancing Canadian artists’ careers and bolstering the competitiveness and stability of the Canadian music industry. This marks the first increase to the fund since 2019 and a critical step in supporting the continued growth of the industry and associated demand on the fund. We recognize the profound impact such investments have in fostering a thriving and vibrant music ecosystem in Canada, as well as in supporting the important work of organizations like Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) and ADISQ - Association québécoise de l'industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo. Though this investment falls short of what the federal government promised in 2021, it signals progress towards strengthening Canada’s music industry and recognizes music’s meaningful contribution to Canada’s culture and economy. As with all Canada Music Fund Contributions, the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings FACTOR will administer this investment for the Anglophone market and the Fondation Musicaction (Musicaction) for the Francophone market.

Such an important topic of discussion with Gee Davy in Music Week 'on what UK artists and labels need to thrive amid increasing global competition' “British music is globally respected but the financial squeeze on UK-based labels and artists, particularly at the smaller end of the market, which cannot rely on corporate reserves or economies of scale, means less budget available for marketing, export or touring. Coupled with a reduction in real terms government funding for some of these activities over time, this means that it has become harder than ever for the UK to compete with other net music exporting nations.” ''There are plenty of UK artists being developed but breaking through is harder than ever. With the independent music business reportedly releasing 80% of new music, despite only 31.5% market share, there is a clear need for support for the independent sector to ensure British music can regain its top chart spots.” “The unique cultural makeup across the UK creates the perfect conditions for great music-making. Music and musicians speak to people’s lives and are important for the nation’s well-being and success and recognition. Homegrown talent and those who support their careers must get the attention they need to find and drive revenues back into the UK’s music economy – to fund investment in diverse future generations of great British music.” https://lnkd.in/ebcWKE3t

Shania Twain Calls for an 'All-Inclusive Country Music' as She Accepts Equal Play Award at 2023 CMT Awards https://buff.ly/3UOmjeB #ShaniaTwain made a powerful statement at the 2023 #CMT Awards when she called for a more inclusive country music industry. During her acceptance speech for the #EqualPlayAward, Twain emphasized the importance of embracing diversity and ensuring that all voices are heard and represented in the genre. This is a crucial step towards creating a more welcoming and diverse community within country music. Twain's advocacy for inclusivity comes at a time when the music industry is facing increasing scrutiny for its lack of diversity and representation. By championing the idea of an 'All-Inclusive Country Music,' Twain is pushing for a more equitable and open-minded approach to the genre. This not only benefits artists from underrepresented groups but also enriches the cultural landscape of country music as a whole. The significance of Twain's words cannot be understated. In an industry that has historically been dominated by a narrow range of voices, her call for #inclusivity serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring artists who have long been marginalized. By shining a light on the need for change, Twain is igniting a conversation that has the potential to reshape the future of country music for the better. As we move forward, it is essential for the #music industry to heed Twain's message and take proactive steps towards creating a more #inclusive and #diverse environment. This means providing # equalopportunities for artists of all backgrounds, amplifying diverse voices, and breaking down barriers that have long hindered progress. Only by working together can we truly achieve an 'All-Inclusive # CountryMusic' that celebrates the richness and # diversity of the genre.

UK Music's analysis of the latest A-level music results reveals a complex picture for the future of music education and our industry's talent pipeline. While we welcome the slight increase in A-level entries, the long-term trend remains concerning. As the voice of the UK music industry, we're calling for urgent action to support and enhance music education. UK Music's Director of Education and Skills, Dr Oliver Morris, states: "It's welcome news that the number of students taking music A-level in England, Wales and Northern Ireland rose from 5,493 in 2023 to 5,517 this year – but this only represents a very modest increase of 0.4%." Our recommendations include: - Hiring more qualified music teachers - Increasing funding for music education programs - Developing stronger partnerships between schools and the music industry - Emphasizing the career opportunities in the £7 billion UK music sector. We at Nordoff and Robbins support UK Music Ltd manifesto ask to "Invest millions more in music education and recruit 1,000 more music teachers. Over the last decade, GCSE music participation has declined by nearly 25%, and A-Level music enrolments have nearly halved. Inadequate investment in state music education is increasing inequality of opportunity: 50% of children at independent schools receive sustained music tuition, compared to just 15% in state schools. The next Government must work to create more opportunities for children to learn music.
