Day 2: National Safe Boating Week Tip for Pleasure Craft Boaters Around Commercial Navigation As motorboat and pleasure craft season reaches its peak, mariners must stay vigilant and prepare for the unexpected. Situational awareness is crucial, as poor judgment or inattention can cause a motorboat to get too close to a tow, lose power, or face other issues, potentially leading to a dangerous situation where the boat may go under the tow of barges. Shown here is Amherst Madison's M/V CAPT. ED HARRIS, traveling upbound on the Kanawha River with six empty barges. This area, known as the Winfield Pool, passes through St. Albans, Nitro, and the Charleston City Front, which are popular spots for pleasure craft, especially on weekends during the summer. To enhance safety, the CAPT. ED HARRIS has deployed "Last Chance Lines" draped over the head of its two strings of empty barges. These lines serve as a last-resort lifeline for individuals in a pleasure craft that may go under the tow. They provide a critical opportunity for someone to grab on and avoid going under with their boat. This safety measure has proven effective in the past and is an important strategy to potentially save lives. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek #LastChanceLines

National Safe Boating Week - Tip #3: No Alcohol and Drug Use We all want to enjoy ourselves, and for many, that includes spending time on the water. However, it’s crucial to prioritize safety while out on a boat or other pleasure craft. Alcohol and drug use can significantly impair your ability to operate a vessel, leading to an increased risk of accidents. To ensure everyone’s safety, designate a sober operator for your craft. Remember, responsible boating means making smart choices that keep you and your passengers safe. Let's make this National Safe Voting Week memorable for all the right reasons! #nationalsafeboatingweek #noalcohol #nodrugs

Lessons from a 2 week camping trip (post 8 of 8): Find your joy. This trip is a LOT. The event is technically a city for the 2 weeks because of its size (this year, 9,200+ attendees). There's so much to do and the temptation is to jam-pack the schedule with All of the Things! It's entirely possible to start the day with a class at 8 a.m. and not return to your own camp until after the parties wind down in the wee hours of the morning. Every day. That way leads to madness and burnout. Instead, I do the activities that bring me the most fulfillment: * I drive a golf cart as part of the Watch safety patrol (I'm on a caaaht) * I teach a class some years * I cook bacon & eggs for our kitchen meal plan every day Are these things work? Yes, of course. It's work I enjoy doing on behalf of others, which makes all the difference. Photo by Laura Peskett, showing our camp's main socializing space, hung with banners representing various group members.
