I'm talking to an OPM group this week about federal technical hiring. I'd be happy to come to your federal agency and talk to you all, too. The talk is about how federal job announcements make it difficult for 'data' candidates to find roles they're a good fit for. Sometimes this is just mislabeling, like a data engineer or technical product manager job that's titled "data scientist". 🏷️ Sometimes this is a job where the duties are so ambiguous candidates can't tell what you're looking for 🤔. (And maybe you don't know, either!) Sometimes the duties are overly broad -- like, a skill set that could involve hiring a whole department, not just one person 🏢. Some of these are communications issues. Some are reflective of larger problems with how positions are structured. Either way, it's more than individual hiring managers can solve themselves. Do you have tech recruiters or managers that understand your business's tech needs? Not having them might be doing your business a disservice. Let's say your business specializes in finances and you decide to hire a data analyst with 5 to 10 years of experience analyzing large data, but zero experience with financial data. This candidate may meet all your other qualifications, but lack of experience with financial data could be a roadblock. The keyword is still data, whether it's financial, marketing, medical, or anything else. The only thing to learn is the terminology. How you analyze and manipulate it will be based on the business rules, data governance policies, and scope of the project. #techrecruiters #dataanalyst

Is there a lack of data talent? There is over 170,000+ Data Engineers and 160,000+ Data Scientists (with those specific job titles) on LinkedIn worldwide. Most likely, a lot more. Yet, some positions take a long time to hire. If you are either the hiring manager or applicant you want the most smoothest process. Each business has its own job requirements, and some will be more challenging than others. In my experience, businesses that hire the best have a structured process and know what they need from the start.
