CAL/OSHA has proposed new regulations to incorporate California's workplace violence prevention law into Title 8, with added requirements that some believe may be burdensome for employers. The regulations suggest appropriate staffing, hiring security personnel, and using engineering controls such as weapon detectors and improved lighting to reduce workplace violence risks. The proposed rules also outline response procedures for incidents, but they face pushback from employers and are still subject to a public comment period. Starting July 1, virtually every employer in California will be legally required to have a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP). This is a watershed moment for corporate security, creating a de facto requirement for almost every employer in the state to have a robust corporate security program. Given California’s reputation as a national trendsetter in legal matters, workplace violence prevention programs may soon be mandatory in other states and across the country. @Mark Freedman and I wrote an article about the new legal requirements and how organizations can position for compliance in SecurityInfoWatch.com.
