Functional MRI (fMRI) is an #MRI technique allowing the study of brain functions and connectivity in a non-invasive way. Clinical use of this technique can be for pre-surgery planning and also to reduce the side effects of invasive interventions. A study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology detected microplastics in human heart tissue for the first time. ⁠ To complete the study, a research team from Capital Medical University used laser direct infrared imaging for a closer look at the hearts of 15 individuals undergoing cardiac surgery. ⁠Their examination found nine different kinds of plastic in five different types of heart tissue. Nine types of microplastics were also found in the patients’ blood prior to and after surgery. Although the sample size is small, the findings are no less worrying.
