By saying this, he is effectively admitting that Portugal is a small country that no matter how many stars they have, can’t compete on the biggest stage like the World Cup. That is very disrespectful to both his country and teammates. It is a fact that before Ronaldo came to the Selecao, Portugal hadn’t won an international trophy and with him, he played a vital role in their Euro 2016 triumph (altho he didn’t score the winning goal and played only a third of that Final). 🤷🏽♂️The Nations League competition is a farce to just give countries more competitive nature in their international breaks. But let’s give credit where it’s due. Portugal won that too. Same argument would have been used to describe the revival of the Finalissima between after Argentina won the Copa America 2021. But Portugal never shied of great stars even before Ronaldo. Eusebio, Luis Figo showed their exemplary craft too. When people say Argentina had glory history even before Messi due to Maradona and the 1986 World Cup. But 1986 - 2022 is a long gap to say Argentina has always been consistent in competing for the big prize. 🥈The difference came when Messi first led a team on paper, if in comparison to the Portuguese 2022 squad, nobody would believe this team actually went all the way to the 2014 Final in Rio and only losing 1-0 to a German powerhouse in extra time. In 2018 Russia, Argentina fielded once again a lacklustre squad and even Leo performed low beyond his usual standards. 🏆2022 Qatar was redemption year. An Argentinian band of brothers was born, one that was willing to die for their captain’s dream. This was the difference between superstar and loyalty with determination. Messi at the age of 35, influenced win after win with his glowing scoring and playmaking form. Yet the heroics of that Final still goes to Emi Martinez for that crazy stoppage time save. The save that won the World Cup. I think Ronaldo meant well when he said the quoted statement. Have you ever felt the pain of defeat not once or twice but back to back on the biggest stage of football? Canada made its CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 debut last night in Atlanta against Argentina in the tournament opener. While Canada eventually lost the match, we showed extreme grit and dexterity, taking the reigning world and South American champion to the limit. Copa América 2024 final preview: Argentina vs Colombia. 🏆 The battle for the title of the 48th edition of the Copa América is on! 💥 Will Argentina claim a record-breaking 16th title, or will Colombia claim their second-ever Conmebol Copa América title? 🥇 This Sunday, the three-week-long CONMEBOL Copa América comes to an end at the Hard Rock Stadium. A 65,000-capacity stadium and befitting venue for the continental contest dubbed 'Rocking the Continent.' Led by eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi, tournament favourites Argentina will unsheathe their swords against Colombia for the continent's ultimate football prize. Despite failing to surpass their total xG in the group stage, La Albiceleste won all three of their games before heading straight into the quarterfinals. Ecuador proved to be a tough nut to crack, but a 4-2 win via penalties got Scaloni’s men over the line before putting Canada aside in a 2-0 semi-final win.   Colombia, on the other hand, surpassed their total xG from the group stage, where they finished as leaders, before picking Panama apart in a 5-0 quarterfinal win. A feisty, event-laden 1-0 semifinal win over Uruguay, despite marshalling on with ten men for the entire second half, ensured they reached the final. Now, they will be looking to take the most prestigious scalp of the tournament. While Argentina remains unbeaten in the last three games against Colombia, they have only won once, that being their third win in eight games against La Tricolor [3W, 4D, 1L].
