Do you know the difference between Fission and Fusion?
Fission involves splitting atoms; fusion is about combining them.
All currently operating nuclear power plants are based on fission technology. They split uranium, plutonium, or other heavy elements, and release heat which is then used to produce steam to drive turbines and generate electricity.
Nuclear fusion on the other hand is a reactor that spits out more energy than it consumes. These reactors could be available as soon as 2025. There are currently no power plants of this sort available today.
Fusion is the process through which the sun and other stars generate energy. In the core of the Sun, extremely high temperatures and pressures cause hydrogen nuclei (protons) to fuse together to form helium nuclei. This process releases a tremendous amount of energy allowing the sun to shine for thousands of years.
