As a former president of a purpose-driven, culturally inclusive, and forward-thinking business, I have transitioned my focus to community service, fostering connections, and counseling opportunities.
One more thing… Today, I came across a quote from the late Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines, that truly resonates with me: “The essential difference in service is not machines or ‘things.’ The essential difference is minds, hearts, spirits, and souls… I tell my employees that we’re in the service business, and it’s incidental that we fly airplanes.” While having a great product is crucial for attracting customers, without Kelleher’s differentiators—“minds, hearts, spirits, and souls”—you’re likely to fall short of expectations. Competitors can eventually catch up, but when your people love what they do and understand their impact, you’re more likely to stay ahead. It’s clear why we invest so much time and effort in filling senior and management roles: having the right people in the right positions is crucial. Ultimately, though, it’s the front-line employees—those in the trenches, in the stores, and on the streets—who can make the world of a difference. When I was working, the true stars were our branch employees who delivered exemplary service day in and day out, and our corporate team who supported them by underwriting customer opportunities, designing marketing plans, offering training, maintaining our systems, writing code, recruiting new field reps, and keeping track of performance. All these front-line superstars provided what we needed to succeed and made me look good in the process. For that, I am forever grateful. So, while it’s important to continually refine your products and services to stand out from the competition, never forget that your people are what truly make the difference. And one more thing…please make the most of each moment this week! #OneMoreThing #PeopleMakeTheDifference

It has officially been one year with Harrington Process Solutuons. Quoting my dad about six months ago, “Chris, I’m so happy for you. You have paid some -heavy dues- to end up in a place that values what you do.” Today, I put in an 11 hour bruiser of a day and -loved it-. I got to collaborate with two rock star colleagues on something a little out of my comfort zone. I got to invest in at least four up-and-coming-pump-people. I intervened on one application that would have gone sideways without my experience. I got one “to do” item for tomorrow that leverages 25+ years of being a pump guy. Deep Breath. The trick to this stuff is decline the invitation for self-immolation when the value you add isn’t what the organization needs. And decline the invitation of “dig Me” ego gratification when the organization groks what you do. Instead, accept the invitation to express gratitude. Accept the invitation to say “thanks” to parents, professors. mentors, employers, and customers who showed you what good looks like. Express thanks that there’s an organization out there that needs what you offer. Because United Airlines agrees. That as a Premier -Silver- traveler last year… I’m kind of a big deal. #TeamHarrington

Last night's Oscars gave us many unforgettable moments, but Ryan Gosling's performance as "I'm Just Ken" truly stood out. It was more than entertainment; it was a reminder of the incredible power of fun and memorability in any performance – be it on the stage or in the boardroom. This philosophy of blending fun with serious business echoed vividly at last week's GLOMO and Rhode Sense Movers Party at Prohibition in New Orleans. The atmosphere was electric, filled with jazz, laughter, and vibrant discussions. It was a clear testament to how bringing joy and memorability into professional settings can significantly amplify engagement and results. In logistics, a field often viewed through a lens of complexity and seriousness, this approach is particularly transformative. Working with experts who not only excel in their field but also know how to add a touch of fun and memorability – like the team at Rhode Sense – changes the game. It turns routine transactions into memorable experiences, fostering stronger relationships and smoother operations. At Rhode Sense, we live by the motto "WHERE THERE'S A ROAD, WE'LL FIND A WAY." But let's not forget: the journey is just as important as the destination. Let's make our business interactions not just successful, but also fun and unforgettable. #BusinessSuccess #FunInBusiness #Logistics #RyanGosling #Oscars #RHODESENSE #Networking

As we're moving towards autumn, people are planning how they're going to move through winter, with its various perils, and into 2025. For CxOs though, especially Chief Technical and Product officers. This can be like setting out to cross an ocean with a boiler fire rumbling below decks. There are things that can be done about it, but it's no good if the people onboard are squabbling about who is right, what should be done, or where the actual fire is. For goodness sake, we're underway, we need to sort it. If there is something on your portfolio that would benefit from a little clarity of thought. Some objective reasoning, and a little less haste, but more speed. Now is the time to ask. Not the week before Christmas. btw, The boiler fire in the picture is from when I was lucky enough to get a footplate ride on Sir Nigel Gresley, last year. In case you're interested :-)
