Recently, I had the privilege of attending an all-day Private Equity Masterclass hosted by Sameer Merchant, CFA from City Investment Training and an ex-Head of HSBC in Private Equity as a guest speaker. Here’s an overview of what we covered: 1. Types of Private Equity: - We delved into growth private equity and leveraged buyouts (LBOs). 2. Building an LBO Model: - We explored the step-by-step process of creating an LBO model. - Calculating IRR (internal rate of return) hurdle rates was a key focus. 3. Debt Instruments for LBOs: - We discussed various debt funding options, including senior debt and mezzanine financing. 4. What Makes a Good LBO Candidate? - Factors like stable cash flows, significant fixed assets, industry leadership, attractive valuations, and strong management. 5. Sources of Return in PE Deals: - We analysed how private equity generates returns through profitability, value enhancement, and debt reduction. Insight: credit giant Ares Management Corporation on macro downturn for private credit portfolios Ares CEO Michael Arougheti highlighted that comparing across asset classes, private credit portfolios are typically carefully placed given the nature of the asset, and generally speaking is at a conservative position across time against previous events such as GFC, .com bubble etc. This coalesces with a memo by Oaktree Capital Management, L.P. CEO Howard Marks where he states the indicators of a bubble included a lacking sense of risk and inflated understanding of the underlying asset. Always keep an eye on potential headwinds, don’t get carried away, continuously focusing on the fundamentals can keep game sharp.
