Note to self, and anyone else that needs it. It never gets easier, we just get better at handling the hard. The work is the work, whether it is learning a new playbook and developing a new culture, or building a business and developing a new team, it’s all been hard and going to stay that way. Ignoring that voice that’s telling us we aren’t good enough and that it can’t be done is hard. Staying in the gym and prioritizing our fitness is hard. Eating what we know we need to eat instead of what we want to eat is hard. Choosing between our priorities is hard. Being consistent is hard. None of it gets easier, but the more we do it, the better we get at it. So get up, pick it up, and step it up. In team sports, success isn't just about physical strength and skills, it's about mental toughness, focus, and resilience. Here are some key strategies I use to boost athletes mental game: - Mindfulness & Visualization: I train athletes to stay present and visualize success. By practicing mindfulness and visualizing positive outcomes, athletes enhance their performance under pressure. - Goal Setting: This is a critical step in Mental Performance. I help athletes set SMART goals both individually and as a team. This provides direction, motivation, and a sense of accomplishment when goals are achieved. - Positive Self-Talk: Many athletes struggle with this by telling themselves negative things about their performance. I train athletes to maintain a positive mindset. Self-doubt and negative self-talk can hinder performance, so I teach them to reframe negative thoughts into positive affirmations. - Team Bonding: I help teams foster a supportive team environment where athletes feel connected and motivated to perform for each other. Strong team cohesion can lead to greater resilience and success on the field. - Mental Toughness Training: My team implements drills and exercises that challenge individuals and teams mentally, such as simulated pressure situations or adversity training. This builds resilience and prepares them to perform their best when it matters most. Remember, mental performance is just as crucial as physical ability in sports. There are aspects of working with clients you simply cannot learn from formal educational studying. Adaptability to each individuals unique motivators, interests, and engagement. I see a lot of fitness professionals who fall to much in love with one training style, modality, or method out of personal interest or personal success and look to apply to to every client Although transformations are often a goal, the bigger picture when working with clients is to help them develop self-accountability and the belief they can achieve goals inside and out of the gym if they apply themselves to it. Lets talk about player load in football! Load is a funny thing because everyone use the word without really knowing what it means. If you asked 100 people you would get 100 different answers! I dont have the correct answer to what load is. But I would suggest that you do everything you can to have a common langues within your team/staff because it would make things a lot easier to communicate. My approach to monitor load during the years has been "less is more". I started all alone in the club trying to do everything i could to hit the load just close to what i thought was right at the time, and when i then got the question "did we hit the load today" i felt like a big disappointment because at some point i missed something. Either to many acc/dec, maybe to few sprints etc. And it really didnt worked out well. Now i have found a more easy way for me to handle the question or in general handle the load (still dont know what it really means). I always have an eye on total distance and from there i have a theme for the day (acc/dec, High speed running, sprints) i can still have some High speed or Sprinting on acc/dec days but the acc/dec is the one getting my attention. If we then got too much high speed we try to lower that for the next day and so on. That often ends up in a load that looks similar from week to week (not that similar but you got my point!). That approach also makes it easier to plan sessions as a staff. Acc/dec is the physical topic so small spaces today (please!!!!) With all the possibilities we have as performnace coaches it maybe sounds a bit lazy to look at such few metrics. But remember that besides the GPS data, you need to analyze, put in order, do gym programs, help players in the gym. Help players in general with things in the club. Look at wellness questionnaire, prepare training sessions with the staff and I have at some point forgot a thing or two if not three. I work alone in a small club and I hope that just one or two pefromance coaches will look at this give it a try. At least try to do less but better 🙌 Im out 🏆

My trainer often gives me straightforward tasks like running from one point to another and back. Just last week, I thought, "This is something I could easily do on my own." And yet I don't.
