European Water Technology Week, September 23-26, a congress at the intersection of science, innovation, talent and business in water technology. An example of a scientific session: The world is full of unexpected but very much needed sensors. You could describe them as cyborg bacteria and digital phantom sensors. Improve you water monitoring with existing infrastructure. Join session 2.4 of #ewtw2024 to know more. As more and more substances have to be tested for quality control, the demand and price of lab tests rise – at that mostly to accommodate legal reasons. But what is you can get more out of your monitoring? Using existing sensors or relying on present biology could not only ensure you cheaper monitoring, but can tell you even more about the origin of your contaminants. This session will break it all down for you. https://lnkd.in/erT7HR89

Next in our HCSS Draghi Report Series: Irina Patrahau, Ron Stoop and Beer (Berend) Kwak present their take on the report’s section on Clean Technologies: https://lnkd.in/ef4PiZxs “The barriers to entry for clean tech companies in Europe are incredibly high. They compete on a global market with companies that have much lower operational costs or that receive governmental subsidies,” says Irina Patrahau. “European countries need to be strategic and act together to maximize these opportunities.” “The problems the EU faces on the clean technology front are first and foremost political. The EU lags behind China (and now the US) due to inability to deliver on an effective internal market, strong and unified decision-making and clear expectations for producers and investors,” Ron Stoop adds. “If we want to improve the competitiveness of our clean technology industry as efficiently as possible, we should give these sectors the regulatory space they need to capitalise on the EU’s investments,” Beer (Berend) Kwak comments. Irina Patrahau: “I believe that Europe has a lot of potential to become an innovative 'laboratory of the world', but we need to choose our battles. It is unlikely that the EU will become an innovative leader in every clean tech industry. Rather, we should be clear about our goals and set realistic expectations.” *** Read the full analysis here [https://lnkd.in/ef4PiZxs]... ...and find the previous updates by Patrick Bolder (on Space), Benedetta Girardi (about Semiconductors), Han ten Broeke and Ron Stoop (on Automotive), Irina Patrahau and Michel Rademaker (about CRM), T. Stay tuned for the concluding installment of this HCSS interview series conducted by Ron Stoop and Beer (Berend) Kwak about the sectorial policies of Mario Draghi’s report “The future of European competitiveness”!

At Biogen, we believe in thinking broadly and considering the bigger picture as we advance our business. Recently, I had the privilege of attending the World Economy Summit in Washington DC, hosted by the fast-growing new media platform, Semafor. The event featured an incredible lineup of speakers who engaged in honest conversations about the geopolitical and economic challenges of our time, discussed opportunities for generative AI, and explored the evolution of our society. The panels with policy makers, CEOs, experts, and elected officials provided global and diverse views. I want to congratulate Justin B. Smith, Steve Clemons, Liz Hoffman, and the entire editorial team at Semafor for putting together such a thought-provoking event. While tech and energy dominated the discussion of national security and economic leadership, I reflected on the role of biotechnology, the importance of preparing for public health threats and aging population. We all have a collective responsibility to create a healthy world, and perhaps this could be a topic for next year's summit. Long live Semafor! The more quality journalism we have, the better our world will be. https://lnkd.in/eUrA4tSP https://lnkd.in/emkwTKyE

Institute Director, Prof Lorenzo Fioramonti, presented at #Greenloop2024 today. Prof Fioramonti and Eduard Romulus Goean, Vice President of New Business Partnerships at THERME GROUP, introduced the collaborative work between the University of Surrey and THERME GROUP regarding the ground-breaking new carbon #tokenomics model. They discussed the unique features and benefits of the tokenomics model, compared to the traditional carbon measurement method. This transparent carbon-centric ecosystem will help all organisations in the visitor economy to access traceable, real, and permanent climate finance investments. “What we are trying to emphasise is that this is a #transdisciplinary work that involves not only diverse areas of research but also private sectors. Our main goal is to produce something that is immediately applicable and usable by the sector.” – Prof Lorenzo Fioramonti
