They should have a field day over here looking at #snowymountain 2.0 , Sydney apartment collapse onto a tunnel and, the continuing saga in #queensland where #csg in #suratbasin is causing #subsidence and #sinkholes. ---------------------------------------- Sinkholes, Potholes and Washouts: Identification and Remediation One of the most frequent “emergency” callouts that a geoscientist will receive is when the ground surface collapses suddenly and causes disruption to infrastructure or property. Questions will be asked – usually “what caused it?”, “how do we fix it?”, and “is it going to happen again?”. The aim of this class is to prepare attendees for that “first responder” role. Diagnosing unstable and collapsing ground requires knowledge of the underlying geological and hydrogeological conditions, the history of mineral extraction and other anthropogenic underground activity, an appreciation of previous land development activities, and an understanding of the cause-and-effect linkage with utilities/services – particularly in urban areas. https://lnkd.in/eCDr6ckc

This month’s most-read ENVIRONMENTAL & ENGINEERING GEOSCIENCE journal (co-published by Geological Society of America and Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists - AEG) article is “Urban Landslide Hazard Mapping: A Case Study in Orinda, California, USA,” by J. David Rogers, Dan Wang, and Rune Storesund. In the early 1990s, Rogers and his team of geologists at the consulting firm Rogers/Pacific in the San Francisco Bay Area began to compile a database that included a map catalog of the geology lying beneath the rolling hills of Orinda, California, to gain a better understanding of the physical factors most often responsible for triggering landslides. These physical parameters were split into four general groups: (1) sites that had never previously been involved in active landsliding; (2) hillside sites that had been involved in prehistoric slope movements but never modified to increase their stability; (3) sites that had never previously experienced slope instability; and (4) sites that failed after multiple attempts to bolster their stability, usually through the application of mechanical stabilization and drainage. 🌉⚛️ Impressive cool and educational al demo on the failure of earth dams 👨🏻🏫 Earth dams can fail due to many reasons, such as overtopping, seepage, structural weaknesses, foundation issues, flow failure or cyclic mobility liquefaction, and others. 🚨 Overtopping occurs when water exceeds the height of the dam, eroding the structure. 💧 Seepage can lead to internal erosion or piping, weakening the core of the dam. 🌉 Structural failures often arise from poor construction, inadequate materials, or design flaws. ⚛️ Foundation issues, such as differential settlement or liquefaction, can affect the stability of the dam. Working in the field of Engineering Geology brought me immense joy and fulfillment. The intricacies of road centreline investigations, borrow pit surveying and quantification, just to mention a few really fascinated me endlessly. Every project presented a unique challenge that stimulated my problem solving skills and creativity. Moreover, the constant innovation and advancement in technology kept me engaged and excited to learn and adapt.
