My next pointer for military leavers looking to get into financial services: Early on, learn about the whole industry at a high level. Don’t drill straight into only the sectors you’ve heard of, or think are glamorous (unless you’re already set for a particular reason). It’s a big industry with a lot of exciting stuff to uncover that you won’t know about yet. Two books which helped me get good context when I left: 🏙️ ‘All You Need to Know About The City’ by Christopher Stoakes 💸 Niall Ferguson ‘The Ascent of Money’ The first is a practical guide; the second is an interesting history. Today, Chat GPT or other LLMs are your friends - use these tools to learn the basics. Ask for a high level picture, see what interests you. Then start to narrow your focus and find people to talk to in those areas. To other veterans who’ve transitioned - any other book recommendations for getting to grips with the industry? #careers #veterans #finance

Thanks Wyatt Hughes for this repost- my 2 cents Small business owners can gain a competitive edge by implementing the following strategies: 1️⃣ Differentiate Your Offering: Identify what sets your business apart from competitors and highlight those unique selling points. Whether it's exceptional customer service, innovative products, or a specialized niche, emphasize your unique value proposition. 2️⃣ Build Strong Customer Relationships: Focus on building strong relationships with your customers. Provide personalized experiences, listen to their feedback, and go the extra mile to exceed their expectations. Loyal and satisfied customers can become brand advocates and help attract new business. 3️⃣ Leverage Technology: Embrace technology to streamline your operations, enhance efficiency, and improve customer experiences. Utilize social media platforms, e-commerce tools, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, and data analytics to gain insights and make informed business decisions. 4️⃣ Stay Ahead of Industry Trends: Keep a close eye on industry trends, emerging technologies, and consumer preferences. Stay informed through industry publications, attending conferences, and networking with peers. By staying ahead, you can adapt quickly to changes and proactively meet customer demands. 5️⃣ Foster Innovation: Encourage a culture of innovation within your business. Empower your employees to contribute ideas, experiment with new approaches, and continuously improve processes. Innovation can lead to new products, services, and operational efficiencies that give you an edge. 6️⃣ Focus on Continuous Learning: Invest in your own professional development and that of your team. Stay updated on industry best practices, attend workshops or webinars, and seek out learning opportunities. Continuous learning ensures you stay informed and can adapt to evolving market conditions. By implementing these strategies, small business owners can differentiate themselves, build strong customer relationships, leverage technology, stay informed, foster innovation, and continuously improve - all of which can contribute to gaining a competitive edge. #SmallBusinessOwners #CompetitiveEdge #Differentiation #CustomerRelationships #Technology #Innovation #ContinuousLearning
Glitter and Rage(!) at the Capital Factory during South by Southwest in Austin. I got to join TJ Rowe and Ben Van Roo on a panel to talk about the challenges and success of innovative small companies working with DOD. Legacy problems like access, funding pathways, and clearance approvals still remain but Army Futures Command and USSOCOM are putting serious money and talent against the problem. Both organizations stood up small business, venture capital, and experimentation programs to knock down barriers. However, education works both ways. Many companies fail to understand the customer or how they can solve the right problem. It takes understanding on both sides of the table to try to navigate to a great deal for both sides. Thanks to Second Front Systems for running a great event.
