Celebrating Black History Month with Nurse Brandon D. Thompson! 🖤🌟 As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to recognize the incredible contributions and resilience of Black individuals in various fields, including healthcare. Overcoming workplace challenges, embracing change through travel nursing, and advocating for equality in the ICU - my healthcare journey is a testament to resilience and achievement. "From nurse to charge nurse, I've triumphed over adversity. As a mentor and advocate, I'm dedicated to uplifting the community. Through social media, I've been mentoring and creating educational videos for new grad nurses as well as serving in a nonprofit organization to fight against health disparities. I have not only shaped my own narrative but have also contributed significantly to the advancement of healthcare and the broader community. Let my story be a source of inspiration for all, reminding us that every journey is a part of the rich tapestry of Black history." 🙌🏾 #Repost #DickiesUniforms

We're celebrating Black History Month in SCC, and as we do so it's imperative that we delve into the depths of our history, acknowledging both triumphs and tragedies that have shaped not only our community's but also our nation’s narrative. We stand on the shoulders of giants—heroes like Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, and the unsung health care workers of the Civil Rights Movement who tended to the wounded and weary. Yet, we cannot ignore the shadows that loom over our past—the egregious exploitation of Black bodies in medical research, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and the ongoing inequities in health care access and outcomes faced by Black communities. Our work goes well beyond this month and the attention we generate. We must stay committed to confronting these injustices head-on. We must dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality and discrimination within our health care system. This means investing in culturally competent care, diversifying our workforce, and advocating for policies that prioritize health equity. Let us use this month not just to celebrate, but to educate, mobilize and keep marching toward change. Together, we can build a future where every individual receives the dignity and respect they deserve. #BlackHistory #NextGenLeaders #SCCProud Progress West Hospital Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital BJC HealthCare

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we are celebrating and honoring a few of our providers and APPs who are essential to our team. Dr. Myriam Roby, Health Equity Clinical Outcomes Director/Hospital Medicine Provider What makes Black History Month meaningful to you? "Black History Month allows me to reflect on the past and present and undisputedly show gratitude, rejoice, and honor my ancestors and the fruits of their labors. Black history is American history. To seek change brings a sense of responsibility to continue to amplify the core message of transforming our societies to be equitable, non-judgmental, and inclusive of all people everywhere, irrespective of race, gender, or other social constructs. Also, having more representation in healthcare will allow for the Black voice to be heard and seen. Many Black people have contributed to advances in healthcare. The social determinants of health relate to the healthcare system. Black leaders, scientists, healthcare providers, educators, and activists' representation in healthcare is crucial. Their experience and appreciation of Black culture, community, food, and more add to the improved delivery of culturally competent patient-centered care."

As we step into Black History Month, it's crucial to reflect on and celebrate Black Americans' profound impact on various facets of society, particularly in the American healthcare system. This month is more than just a period of recognition; it's an opportunity to acknowledge Black Americans' resilience, innovation, and excellence throughout history. In healthcare, the contributions of Black professionals have been nothing short of revolutionary, often achieved in the face of systemic barriers and discrimination. Figures like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the first successful open-heart surgery, and Dr. Patricia Bath, the inventor of the Laserphaco probe that revolutionized laser cataract surgery, have advanced medical science and paved the way for future generations of healthcare professionals. The legacy of nurse Mary Eliza Mahoney, America's first Black professional nurse, reminds us of the importance of representation and equality in healthcare. Her dedication to excellence and equality has inspired countless individuals to pursue and excel in nursing, changing countless lives in the process. It's also essential to recognize the role of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells (HeLa cells) have been instrumental in medical research, leading to significant breakthroughs in treating various diseases. Her story highlights the critical discussions around ethics, consent, and recognition in medical research. This month, commit to not only celebrating these monumental contributions but also to continuing the work of dismantling systemic barriers in healthcare and beyond. Let's honor the legacy of these trailblazers by fostering an inclusive, equitable, and diverse healthcare system that recognizes and elevates the contributions of all its members. #BlackHistoryMonth #HealthcareHeroes #DiversityInMedicine #InclusiveHealthcare

Please join us in celebrating the amazing history and contributions of the Black Community all month long! We invite you to embrace Black History Month at your organization and find different ways to celebrate with your staff. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Cater a celebration lunch for your staff with a few different dishes from local Black owned restaurants. Have a presentation on Black History or a topic to foster learning and discussion during the lunch. 2. Send out weekly emails highlighting one or two contributions or historical events from the Black Community. Include a list of recommended books by Black authors that coincide with the email highlight. 3. Send out a list of local Black History events and encourage your staff to attend. Then ask them to share something they learned. 4. Foster an inclusive environment where your staff is encouraged to share about their culture with others in the office, and where they are encouraged to ask and learn about the cultures of others. 5. Highlight your Black staff members through short biographies that include some of their specific contributions to the organization and things they wish to share about their family, history, and culture. These are just a few of the many ways you can celebrate Black History Month at your organization to help inspire discussion and promote inclusion within your team. #blackhistorymonth #blackbusiness #blackexcellence #inclusion #diversity #blackauthors

As we gear up to celebrate Black History Month, I am thrilled to introduce a unique and transformative workshop designed to redefine the way we approach this important period. I invite you to explore "The Soundtrack To The Black Experience" - a workshop curated not just to educate, but to heal and empower. Unlike traditional programs, this workshop is not about trauma dumping; it's about healing from collective wounds while celebrating the resilience and richness of the Black experience. Using my expertise and personal journey, I guide participants through impactful conversations, steering away from awkwardness by utilizing the universal language of music. Workshop Focuses: ✊🏾 Trauma Healing, Not Dumping: This session navigates the depths of history and current societal challenges, but it's grounded in healing and empowerment rather than dwelling on pain. ✊🏾 Music as a Catalyst: We harness the power of music to facilitate crucial conversations. It's the soundtrack that opens doors to understanding and connection. ✊🏾 Safe Space for Sharing: Creating an environment where individuals feel empowered to share their experiences, fostering growth and empathy. February commemorates Black History Month, a tradition spanning 54 years, dedicated to honoring the enduring triumphs and struggles of African Americans in the tapestry of U.S. history. Throughout this month, we pay tribute to the remarkable contributions and milestones achieved by Black individuals across diverse domains including science, literature, art, politics, and beyond. It’s a time for us to pause and reflect on the profound resilience, bravery, and cultural vibrancy that have indelibly shaped our nation. Yet, as we celebrate, it’s crucial to recognize the longstanding disparities faced by the African American community in healthcare and mental health services. Historically, this population has been underserved and disproportionately affected by systemic inequities, exacerbating health outcomes and perpetuating cycles of inequality. Therefore, alongside our commemoration of Black History Month, let us also advocate for increased awareness and action to address these disparities. Let us amplify the voices calling for accessible, equitable healthcare and mental health support for all members of society, irrespective of race or background. By shedding light on these issues and working towards comprehensive solutions, we move closer to a future that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of life. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMonth2024 #BlackHistory #MentalHealth #VRG #VanguardResearchGroup #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters
