Please join us in celebrating the amazing history and contributions of the Black Community all month long! We invite you to embrace Black History Month at your organization and find different ways to celebrate with your staff. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Cater a celebration lunch for your staff with a few different dishes from local Black owned restaurants. Have a presentation on Black History or a topic to foster learning and discussion during the lunch. 2. Send out weekly emails highlighting one or two contributions or historical events from the Black Community. Include a list of recommended books by Black authors that coincide with the email highlight. 3. Send out a list of local Black History events and encourage your staff to attend. Then ask them to share something they learned. 4. Foster an inclusive environment where your staff is encouraged to share about their culture with others in the office, and where they are encouraged to ask and learn about the cultures of others. 5. Highlight your Black staff members through short biographies that include some of their specific contributions to the organization and things they wish to share about their family, history, and culture. This February, as we celebrate Black History Month, it's important to reflect on the health inequities that still impact Black communities. Covid-19 highlighted glaring disparities, with higher rates of infection, hospitalization, and death among Black Americans. However, these inequities existed long before the pandemic. As we honor the fights for justice and civil rights of generations past, we must recommit to the fight for health equity today. Quality, affordable healthcare should be a right for all, regardless of race, ethnicity or zip code. This means expanding access, addressing social determinants of health, increasing representation of Black professionals in healthcare, and continually assessing outcomes. The journeys toward progress of the past teach us that justice comes from sustained commitment. This Black History Month, let us reflect and act with purpose toward equity and justice in healthcare and beyond. The wellbeing of too many depends on it.

Figures like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the first successful open-heart surgery, and Dr. Patricia Bath, the inventor of the Laserphaco probe that revolutionized laser cataract surgery, have advanced medical science and paved the way for future generations of healthcare professionals. The legacy of nurse Mary Eliza Mahoney, America's first Black professional nurse, reminds us of the importance of representation and equality in healthcare. Her dedication to excellence and equality has inspired countless individuals to pursue and excel in nursing, changing countless lives in the process. It's also essential to recognize the role of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells (HeLa cells) have been instrumental in medical research, leading to significant breakthroughs in treating various diseases. Her story highlights the critical discussions around ethics, consent, and recognition in medical research. This month, commit to not only celebrating these monumental contributions but also to continuing the work of dismantling systemic barriers in healthcare and beyond. Black consumers want to wear items that give them a sense of pride. They are willing to loyally support a brand that they believe helps their community. We're celebrating Black History Month in SCC, and as we do so it's imperative that we delve into the depths of our history, acknowledging both triumphs and tragedies that have shaped not only our community's but also our nation’s narrative. We stand on the shoulders of giants—heroes like Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, and the unsung health care workers of the Civil Rights Movement who tended to the wounded and weary. Yet, we cannot ignore the shadows that loom over our past—the egregious exploitation of Black bodies in medical research, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and the ongoing inequities in health care access and outcomes faced by Black communities. Our work goes well beyond this month and the attention we generate. We must stay committed to confronting these injustices head-on. We must dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality and discrimination within our health care system. This means investing in culturally competent care, diversifying our workforce, and advocating for policies that prioritize health equity. Let us use this month not just to celebrate, but to educate, mobilize and keep marching toward change. Black History Month is next week in the US and I have a confession to make. As a kid I HATED Black History Month. I was tired of hearing the same stories about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. By middle school I pretty much checked out. By high school it felt like I knew everything I needed to know about Black history. Slavery happened, it ended, “separate but equal”, “I have a dream” with MLK and Rosa sat at the front of the bus. I was over it. I’m sure your team is tired of the same song and dance every year as well. For this year’s Black History Month, please do more than just the “flags, food and fun” as Dr. Jonathan Ashong-Lamptey says 😂 The unconscious bias training is getting old as well. Black History Month (and every affinity month) is more than just that. It’s an opportunity to evaluate what you’ve actually been doing to support these groups and invest in making your workplace a better environment for them. Your team members are probably already rolling their eyes as they’re getting the emails about the events y’all are planning to put on. Your team isn’t asking for a “soul food day”. Your Black employees are asking for you to do something beyond the surface level that actually has an impact on them and their community. Next month is the perfect time to reinvest and re-evaluate where you can be doing better to support your current Black team members and pave the way for future ones.
