When it comes to accessing mental health support, some of the most significant challenges faced by families from diverse cultural backgrounds include cross-cultural communication, understandings of health, trouble navigating health systems and marginalisation. Culturally responsive practice is about setting aside your own feelings of discomfort to create a safe space for families to express their thoughts, feelings, experiences and expertise. Through this, you can foster a mutual understanding of differing perspectives and priorities within the family. This practice course has been developed to support you in developing skills to not only recognise cultural assumptions and judgements, but also respond to children who have experienced racism and help families shape their meaning and response. By addressing your cultural biases and highlighting families’ strengths, you can help children flourish by feeling proud of their cultural identity. Big news from citiesRISE! We've teamed up with the University of Washington in Seattle to figure out what makes a city friendly for young people's mental health, and this work was published in Nature. This was a major effort where we worked with youth leaders, multiple research experts, funders and system leaders to design the Delphi, run it, analyze the data and write the paper together. The Delphi was carried out in over 50 countries. This sets the stage for our new initiative, Centered Cities(https://lnkd.in/ec5tqAHG) We're excited to use what we've learned to support mental health advocacy efforts through our various initiatives. Today is the first day of school for my children. As any parent knows, this can have a significant impact on our mental health and productivity. It’s a reminder of just how important our teachers are. And yet, how come they are not one of the best-earning professionals we have? It’s symptomatic of a broken society that those who help raise our kids are not among the aspirational careers any decent society would prioritize. These adults not only shape the future of our children but also allow us to produce for our companies and economies. What’s even more concerning is that the consensus about this issue is way bigger than most of the public topics you hear every day in the media. The solutions to this problem are pretty obvious to anyone who knows how our world works too. And yet... Here we are!

**Women’s health is not a stand-alone issue; it is a cornerstone of societal well-being and progress. Better health and well-being for women create a ripple effect that extends to families, communities, and nations. This holistic approach, supported by collective action and sustained investment, will not only narrow the health gap but also contribute to the betterment of a shared global future.** I’m very excited to share this update at Homewood Health Centre on International Women's Day! One of the first of its kind in Canada, the Women’s Trauma & Concurrent program, a program for women and all who identify as female, is a new treatment offering soon to launch in early 2024. This inpatient program will offer deep expertise in the treatment of complex trauma for women, with or without a concurrent substance use disorder, in a dedicated unit at Homewood Health Centre. While the core needs of those who have experienced trauma are the same regardless of gender, some women may require additional support in the way that they access care. Women with complex trauma, (those who have experienced repeated exposure to interpersonal trauma such as sexual assault and intimate partner violence) may have trouble feeling safe in a mixed gender environment.
