It is British science week! The IPO has highlighted a autonomous vehicles for it. Last week Members of Parliament discussed the Automated Vehicles Bill- the proposed legislation aims to tackle various issues, such as determining responsibilities for ensuring safe vehicle operation in different scenarios, like when vehicles are operating autonomously or when self-driving features are active. Transport Secretary Mark Harper highlighted the potential to enhance road safety, citing that driver error contributes to 88% of road collisions. He also acknowledged the transformative potential of AV technology. Mr. Harper emphasised the importance of gaining public trust during the implementation of this technology, recognisng that any issues are likely to gain more attention than the benefits. These guys just won $1.05B in funding for what seems to me to be an interesting approach to autonomous vehicles. They're taking a "learning" approach where the vehicle learns as it goes, which seems to me a novel way to approach this problem. Despite the hype, autonomous vehicles on the open road are not progressing as fast as many predicted. This idea and approach seems like a useful way forward and I'm really curious as to what the effect on people's expectations are if you don't assume the car is fully capable right from the start. https://lnkd.in/dXWy_sR5

Excited to be speaking in Stuttgart this week at the ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo about making ADAS and AV systems more human-focused. The title of the talk is 'Moving from ADAS to HDAS – humanized driver assistance systems' and will go through how: - ADAS and AV technologies are too focused on the physics of situations - At best, this leads to annoyance and a loss of trust with ADAS/AV technologies, meaning people ignore them - At worst, it leads to accidents and fatalaties as systems are switched off or complex situations misinterpreted - Developing ADAS and AV technologies focused on the behaviour of VRUs, not just their motion, is key - Some approaches that can make ADAS/AV more humanised and lead to better performance and compliance, and what we do here at Humanising Autonomy Come say hi if you're there 👋 🚶♂️ 🚗 #HDAS #BehaviourAI
