How do you decide which charities your business donates to? At Keartland & Co, I’ve decided to focus my donations on the “changing the system” pillar of my impact strategy. Businesses operate within a wider system and many of the standard ways of operating are defined or dictated by that system. To deliver on my vision and effect meaningful, long term sustainable change, the system must change. My objective is to donate 1% of annual revenue with at least 80% of donations going to organisations that are ‘changing the system’. I make regular donations to ClientEarth, Good Law Project, ShareAction and Global Justice Now. ➡ Any others you think should be on my radar which are doing impactful work at changing the system businesses operate in? NCCCMA has designated the Civic Local Foundation as its charity of choice to assist local government employees and local governments impacted by Helene. This fund has been established through a partnership of two NCCCMA partners, Civic Federal Credit Union and the NC Association of Regional Councils of Government (NCARCOG). Civic Federal Credit Union is the state-wide credit union serving local government employees and their families. NCCCMA has a deep relationship and a shared values with both Civic Federal Credit Union and NCARCOG of supporting good local government and the employees who serve the public. 100% of all donations will go directly to go to local government entities to help local government employees, help emergency management agencies working on the front lines, help supporting organizations such as non-profits and local businesses that can assist communities and people impacted, and to assist the regional COGs with their support efforts to recover from the storm and rebuild communities. The facilitation of the funding will be the sole responsibility of NCARCOG , who have the relationships and partnerships with our local government communities across the state.   Stevenage Community Trust (SCT) is a charity that was formed in 1990 to help and support the people of Stevenage and surrounding villages. I was appointed as one of the Trustees in May 2023 and I am Chair of the Membership Committee. Hopefully, during the past year you will have noticed an increased amount of events that we have taken part in, including Stevenage Day, an evening with Steve Evans and the Christmas appeal week. Many more events are planned for 2024 as the charity is gaining real momentum. Without the support of local businesses we couldn’t help so many people, and unlike most other charities, every penny that we get from membership will be used to help local families and individuals. By getting involved you won’t just be giving back to our local community, you will also get to see how your money is spent. The corporate members themselves are like a community – supporting each other, and often promoting each other’s businesses. Our quarterly Members’ mornings are becoming increasingly popular, and mean that we get to meet each other and learn more about each of our businesses. There are so many other benefits that come with membership, including being invited to the Annual Golf day and the 'not to be missed' Annual Black Tie dinner. One of the biggest things the charity does is giving grants to individuals and families that are in urgent need - we can act quickly and efficiently in these cases. Also, last Christmas we handed out over 250 grants to local families who wouldn’t have been able to celebrate Christmas without our help. Grants can be given to local schools for special projects, for instance we recently contributed towards the cost of new playground activities at The Bedwell school. Money is also awarded to other local charities which need our support. We often supply local sporting organisations with kit and equipment. Donating ≠ Decluttering Many of us think that by donating unwanted items, we’re “decluttering” our lives and homes. But what if we're missing the bigger picture? Instead of just passing on items we no longer want, we should be asking ourselves how much we truly need in the first place. ✅ Be more intentional: Donating isn't a solution to overconsumption. It starts with being mindful of what we bring into our lives and reducing unnecessary purchases. ✅ Donations with purpose: When we do donate, we should think about how our contributions can support those in need and organizations that create meaningful impact, like CoGoodwill. Donating is about giving back, not just clearing space.
