LAX has embarked on an ambitious expansion of its air cargo facilities to meet growing demand under its Cargo Modernization Program. This project is in its initial stages; timelines and specific budgets have not yet been determined. Once the pre-development phase is completed and a final decision to proceed is made, the specifics will be determined and released. The initiative includes the construction of new cargo terminals and the modernization of 27 existing facilities ranging in age from 20 to 80 years, which collectively comprise 2.6 million square feet. Skylark Consulting Group forecasts that air cargo throughput in the Los Angeles region will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 2.6%, from 3.6 million tons in 2022, to reach 7.7 million tons by 2045. Notably, the 2022 figures and estimate also include data from Ontario (Calif.) International Airport. To accommodate this growth, LAX will need to make a multi-billion-dollar investment. Complicating matters are LAX’s location, as fully developed neighborhoods, and the Pacific Ocean border it. In 2023, Los Angeles World Airports, the authority overseeing LAX, selected LAX Community Partners to lead the development of the Cargo Modernization Program. Ricondo & Associates, Inc. was chosen to lead the environmental, technical, and expert consulting aspects of the project. What are your thoughts on the expansion project?
