"For many of us, a routine doctor visit may be a benign proposition, but for trauma survivors, the experience can feel terrifying, and may often be avoided at all costs. While trauma is experienced throughout the lifespan, the healthcare community continues to struggle with learning ways in which trauma affects an individual's health, relationships, utilization of the healthcare system, and ability to adopt health-related recommendations." Every second counts, especially for the frontliners at the National University Centre for Trauma. At an emergency department, patients are treated for a broad range of conditions such as breathing difficulties, fainting, heart attack or stroke. Whereas at a trauma centre, patients have more critical or life-threatening conditions usually because they were seriously injured from a traffic accident, a fire, a fall from height or were stabbed, for example. Read for a deeper insight into what they do, what motivates them and how they're making a difference in saving lives. #OneNUHS

Healing Hearts: Navigating Emotional Recovery After a Heart Attack "Navigating Emotional Recovery: Support for Heart Attack Survivors" delves into the emotional challenges faced by individuals post-heart attack and the critical role of emotional support in their recovery journey. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly one-third of heart attack survivors experience significant psychological distress, including anxiety and depression (CDC, 2022). Immediate emotional impacts can exacerbate recovery challenges, underscoring the need for robust support systems. Long-term emotional management strategies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and peer support networks, are pivotal in helping survivors cope with fear of future health complications and lifestyle adjustments (CDC, 2022). Personal testimonials illustrate how participation in support groups and access to counseling services facilitate emotional healing and resilience-building among survivors. Community resources and online forums also play a crucial role in providing ongoing support and encouragement. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings indicates that survivors who engage in peer support networks exhibit lower rates of recurrent cardiovascular events and improved quality of life post-recovery (Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, 2023). By integrating emotional support into cardiac rehabilitation programs, healthcare providers can empower survivors to navigate emotional challenges effectively and optimize their long-term heart health outcomes. Caveat: Emotional support complements medical care but should not substitute it. Survivors should continue to follow their healthcare provider's guidance and treatment plans. Thank you for reading! What a vibe, am I right? Life hits unexpectedly, around a week and a half postpartum I started developing complications that required me going in for a minor procedure yesterday. All went well and I was back home yesterday afternoon but from a perspective of someone who has gone through a lot of medical trauma in the past 3 years, man yesterday hit hard. I know how fortunate I am to have seen my Dr and gotten scheduled for surgery so quickly but when you have PTSD things hit hard and it takes a lot of mental work to reign that back in and be confident in knowing you are ok. Part of what I needed to do mentally to prepare for going in for this procedure was to make a list for my husband of websites and log ins that deal with bills etc and what to do if things went bad and I needed a blood transfusion and a possible surgical escalation. Thankfully none of that was necessary! But it was in my mind because y’all, I was not in control of the situation and that is a really scary feeling for me. All this to say, it’s really important to have your things together and not just before a procedure but in general. Have your will together, if you have a partner make a list of the things you deal with in regards to housing, bill pay etc so it’s one less thing they have to worry about should something happen to you. Yeah, it can seem morbid, but I prefer to look at it as being prepared and making sure your partner has less to worry about should you not be in a position to help them. Be prepared, have a great weekend. #anotherprocedure #medicaltrauma #medicalptsd #beingprepared #writeyourwill #organizeyourfinances #financialfreedom #financialliteracy #postpartum #strokesurvivor #strokeawareness #aphasiaawareness

I have just completed my refresher basic life support at the Independent Doctors Federation. As doctors we have completed this many times and have been involved in resuscitation in hospitals often. Few had experience outside of a hospital setting. What would you do? 1. Any action, no matter how small, chest compressions, calling an ambulance or seeking help makes a big difference.
