We surveyed members of our Inclusion & Diversity Impact Community—a group of more than 400 senior-most DEI leaders from large companies—for a pulse on the state of DEI. What we found is encouraging: Despite a volatile landscape, 93% reported that momentum at their company has either remained steady (38%) or increased (55%) in the past year. It was a privilege to be part of the discussions at the #WomeninLeadershipsummit last week, exploring the invaluable role of women in shaping leadership dynamics across industries. Former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Leigh Sales AM, Elizabeth Gaines, Anna Lee, Virginia Briggs, Kelly Wood, Nora Fraser, amongst others generously shared their insights and invaluable advice. I had the chance to share my experiences on how to drive higher levels of performance by combining the "business of love" with "the love of business". Here are four of my favourite take-outs (from a long list) – a blend of my perspectives, and those graciously shared by others: 1. The power of the “Jedi Council”: As leaders, cultivating a trusted circle, our very own "Jedi Council" or "Stable of 6," is transformative. These are the individuals we turn to for wisdom, support, and mentorship. Together, we amplify each other's strengths and navigate challenges with resilience and grace. 2. Taking charge when in charge: Leadership often demands seizing the reins and leading with conviction. When entrusted with responsibility, it's essential to embrace it wholeheartedly, and make decisions that drive progress and inspire those around us. 3. Prioritise self-care: Remember, taking holidays isn't an act of indulgence, it's a necessity. As leaders, we must replenish our energy reserves to continue making a meaningful impact. Avoid the trap of martyrdom; instead, prioritise self-care to fuel your ability to give energy and create lasting change. 4. Embrace ambition: Ambition often conjures up images of ruthless, ‘at all costs’ operators. But harnessed authentically, it is critical to leadership success, Ambition fuels our aspirations and propels us toward our goals. Let's dare to dream big, and act boldly; setting our sights high and turning aspirations into reality. Let's keep this dialogue alive and thriving! Juggling my career alongside motherhood has certainly presented its share of surprises (cue the laughter at my previous overly optimistic post on the subject 😂)... That's why today's discussion on 'Overcoming Barriers to Leadership: Insights from the FTSE Women Leaders Review' provided a refreshing perspective. A few of the insights from our esteemed panelists truly resonated with me. Here are the key nuggets of wisdom that stood out: ⭐Embracing life's twists and turns, those unexpected "speed bumps," often serves as a catalyst for clarifying personal values and redefining where our time should be invested. ⭐Recognising that our career paths are as unique as we are, and that deviation from the conventional route is not just acceptable but potentially enriching. ⭐Understanding that our professional journey operates in seasons; there are times when we sprint and others when we must gracefully accept a slower pace – and that's perfectly fine! ⭐Being ruthlessly intentional in the choices you make—and confidently vocalising your needs—plays a pivotal role in shaping the career path you want. Two women. Two different firms. Two different cities. What do they have in common? Both sit on the deals team. Both work at PE firms. Both are the only women on their teams. Both have made it clear that their next career move will be to a firm where women hold leadership positions. That’s right. These two women I spoke with this week are planning their exits because they don’t see a future where they’re valued. Firms, if your leadership team looks like the cast of an all-male reboot of a 1950s boardroom drama, yeah you know which one I’m talking about, it’s probably time for a rewrite. So, what does this mean for firms today? Here are two crucial lessons: Lesson 1: If your firm is still operating with a homogenous leadership team, you're not just behind the times, you're actively pushing talent out the door. Lesson 2: Creating a culture that values and promotes diversity isn't just about making grand statements—it's about tangible actions. Your policies and practices need to reflect your commitment to diversity. This means mentorship programs, clear pathways to leadership, and a genuine commitment to inclusive practices. That's it, no more pretending!!! [A JUSTIFIED RANT 😡 ] After the wake of George Floyd's death, and while companies were worried about their bottom line and needed employees to feel supported during COVID, we saw a HUGE surge in employee-centric initiatives. In simple terms, companies started acting like they gave a damn. For a second, we were all a bit hopeful: maybe this was the beginning of a new enlightenment era. It wasn't! Every day I have conversations with women in senior leadership who see any support or advantage being cast their way get eroded and cannibalized. Top leaders who thrive in the STATUS QUO are done pretending they actually care about the data, the business case for a heterogeneous workforce, or their employees—it's back to business as usual. One leader confessed to me that her company's employees were actively discouraged from participating in DEI initiatives (via their annual review feedback). Another leader shared that her DEI role was being eliminated (apparently, her leadership now knows everything they need to know about DEI, and they're good!). This comes on the heels of seeing all her sponsors and advocates lose their jobs. And those are just the two most recent ones. FYI, neither of these organizations is hurting. This is why I do the work I do. It's why I choose to work with women in senior leadership (powerful and influential) who have always challenged the STAUS QUO (change makers) who, even at this junction in their careers, have big visions and drive to make a real difference. News pieces like these make my day.   - Accenture wants to be gender-balanced and have 30% women in leadership levels by 2025. To achieve this, the company is creating intentional career advancement opportunities for high-potential women into leadership roles. - NatWest Group has a workstream dedicated to gender balance. It is also prioritizing hiring, training, and mentoring more women for leadership roles. - PwC India is focusing on the representation of women in leadership combined with substantive action. Today, on International Women's Day, I want to spotlight three leaders who have influenced my professional journey. These incredible women have shaped my career and left an indelible mark on my leadership, strategy, and collaboration approach. Kati Ryan was my first enablement boss, and she taught me many things. She taught me how to use my skills as a part of a team. She patiently listened to my 100+ ideas on a topic and helped me focus on the best ones. She encouraged and fostered my creativity, which I have used ever since. Cindy Thatcher hired me shortly after I was laid off in 2020. She helped me navigate an older and larger company than I had worked in before. She encouraged me to stretch from relying on my enablement abilities to working with and leading my fellow global enablement team members. Shannon Mackinnon was my enablement boss at Medallia. She championed my use of creativity and, more than any other boss, helped me become a better manager (which took much work). These women are not just former bosses. Over the years, I have reached out to them for guidance, and they have reached out to me. They are mentors, trailblazers, and pioneers who have blazed paths not only for those fortunate enough to work directly under their guidance but also for countless others. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let's remember the impact that strong, dedicated women leaders have on our lives and careers. To Kati, Cindy, and Shannon, thank you for your leadership, wisdom, and unwavering support.
