A scathing insight into the current state of affairs within the school estate, with no resolution in sight. It is unfortunate that despite completing "the largest survey of schools in Europe" and the 2021 School rebuild programme, that many schools are still in completely unacceptable condition, with our many of our children and educators across the country having to normalise cold, damp, unsafe learning environments. For those schools that aren't in dire condition, they still face the inevitable cyclical dilemma of insufficient funding. Should they ignore the smaller issues now, so they can afford the larger scales later, or accept that they will never be able to complete the larger, necessary projects. If you haven't watched the Panaroma episode, I implore you to take the time to. https://lnkd.in/eCu_9M-7 When will the Department for Education finally have a tangible solution? #BBCpanaroma
For anyone that missed the Panorama program last night focusing on Department for Education capital & maintenance funding ... https://lnkd.in/eybsb2NW I had some mixed thoughts and feelings about this. Stand alone maintained schools, lone academies or small MATs face severe adversity in the face of large maintenance or replacement costs that they simply cannot afford. If eligible, they face the lottery that is CIF, which can hinge on how well, or badly, the submission is written irrespective of how terrible the building condition is. One benefit of being in a larger MAT is the addition of the School Condition Allocation (SCA). This additional ringfenced budget does allow schools in larger MATS to undertake the larger repairs and replacements that stand alones cannot even consider. However even SCA is only of benefit if the whole MAT estate is not in dire condition, otherwise it is a drop in the ocean. Balancing the SCA budget to individual schools need is a full time job on an ever changing estate. SCA, whilst allowing for larger repairs and upgrades, is still not enough for block replacement, or even mobile building replacement of which many schools rely on. The SCA model has its place, but the value of the fund needs to vastly increase to cover these larger costs. The slow paced school rebuilding programme has its place also, but many schools will continue to slip through the net. Those 2 forms with 12 brick classrooms in good condition, and 2 mobile classrooms in dire condition will not be eligible for the Schools Rebuilding Programme, but even in a MAT, may not be able to afford the £300,000 replacement cost of 2 mobile buildings We are relying on the Department for Education to solve the £Billion pound question....

One-word Ofsted grades scrapped in England's schools! It has been no secret that there has been fierce debate for years about whether one overall grade can sum up the complexity of a school. Ofsted have confirmed they will still inspect schools against the same standards, and reports will continue to give details on specific aspects of how a school is performing, as they do now. Full article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eEmHeTFt What are your thoughts on the changes? #Ofsted #UKSchools #EnglandSchools

The system of one-word Ofsted judgements for schools in England should stay, according to the government. It said the grades, such as "outstanding" or "inadequate", gave parents an important summary of local schools. What are your thoughts on the one-word judgements? https://bit.ly/3UwHlhQ #ReedEducation #education #Ofsted #inspections #schools

IS OFSTED FAIR TO SMALL SCHOOLS? This topic has been with us ever since the new framework was introduced in 2019. The framework was intended to be applicable to all types of schools equally....but is it? A good evaluation system will hold people to account for what they control, not for their context, so this is an important question. #ofsted #primaryeducation My latest YouTube video brings together some of the evidence and opinion. https://lnkd.in/eSy8qQeM
