The Heart of America: A Daughter's Reflection on D-Day's 80th Anniversary Today, as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the ceremony in Normandy serves as a powerful reminder of our national identity and the sacrifices made for our freedom. Watching President Joe Biden, representing every American, stand alongside the heroes of that fateful day, I am moved by the enduring spirit and unwavering patriotism that define America. Reflecting on my father, a proud US Navy veteran of World War II, I am reminded that true patriotism transcends political affiliations. His love for family and country and his unwavering dedication to service embody the American spirit of resilience and dedication. As we honor those who sacrificed everything for democracy, let us remember the values that unite us: honor and decency. Let us recommit to the principles that define our great nation and ensure that the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedoms were not in vain. In this hour of reflection, let us embrace America's true essence and uphold its legacy of courage, unity, and love of country. Let us reject those who attempt to divide us or use words like retribution to describe a future none of us would choose. Anything less would be a betrayal to those who stood the watch for us and to future generations. "The price of unchecked tyranny is the blood of the young and the brave. In their generation, in their hour of trial, the Allied forces of D-Day did their duty. Now the question for us is: In our hour of trial, will we do ours?" We think this also applies to all the men & women Advisors of Security Force Assistance Command, 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade, 3rd Security Force Assistance Brigade (3SFAB), 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade, 5th Security Force Assistance Brigade. Today, the George W. Bush Presidential Center and 12 other presidential foundations and centers have issued a joint statement as a reminder of what makes the United States a great nation; our ideals rooted in freedom and democracy. “The unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, are principles that bind us together as Americans. They have enabled the United States to strive toward a more perfect union, even when we have not always lived up to those ideals….” Read the statement, share it, and have a conversation: https://lnkd.in/g_QgfvxJ

In light of today's agreement, we should revisit this 1961 wisdom.... The Speech In his address, Eisenhower cautioned the American public against the “acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.” He warned that this complex, which had grown out of the World War II era, had the potential to distort the nation’s political institutions and threaten democracy itself. Key Quotes “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.” “A vital element in keeping the peace is our ability to be as technologically strong as we can. But every dollar we spend militarily is a dollar that cannot be spent on our schools, our infrastructure, or our social programs.” “We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted.”

Program Manager, former Surface Warfare Officer (nuclear), Volunteer tour guide USS Alabama Battleship Park, Board member Mobile, Alabama Chapter of the Navy League
I just finished reading “The H. L. Hunley: The Secret Hope of the Confederacy” and I loved it! On the surface this is a book about the first submarine to sink an enemy ship, but it is also a case study of technical naval innovation during war. The technical, cultural, material, bureaucratic, and financial challenges will be familiar to anyone involved in naval innovation or the current naval conflicts in the Black and Red Seas. Five out of five stars. https://lnkd.in/d_GCVw33

During Treaties Recognition Week, we honour the treaties that First Nations signed with the Crown. These agreements hold profound importance, and symbolize an enduring commitment to mutual understanding. Honouring these treaty relationships and the responsibilities they carry is an important step on the path toward Reconciliation—and the foundation for our work with First Nations at the NWMO. Let's remember the importance of these agreements, and that we are all treaty people. Explore their significance and our journey here: https://nwmo.co/3slK822

The USA has not only lost leverage in this region, but more importantly, voluntarily ceded influence over to Azerbaijani militants and indirectly facilitated their take over of Artsakh. Nearly all of the military ammunition used by Azerbaijan is supplied by Israel. The USA has chosen time and time again to strengthen their ties with Israel, and help bolster the Israeli defense industry by propping up the Azerbaijani military. The US calculation was to sacrifice a small, helpless Christian nation in order to fortify their influence and positioning in the region to defend against Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc. An unpopular opinion but here it goes: No one is coming to save Armenia. The nation has zero leverage on the world stage. Our people are best served immigrating to America, specifically, where they’re free to exercise their strong Christian faith, and free to rebuild a new Armenia as Saroyan envisioned. And yes, I know that’s a distortion of Saroyan’s original quote, but that doesn’t make it any less impactful. Rebuilding new Armenian communities in the United States will better preserve our culture, alphabet, language, food, dance/dress etc than proudly dying while defending land. In order to rebuild and preserve our culture, we need a thriving population of proud Armenians. That won’t happen when our men and women are dying in a war they can’t and won’t win.

This makes sense. If the #builtworld will/must adapt to #climate impacts to be resilient, then the law will have to keep up. And it isn’t / hasn’t. Thoughtful article here from Mark Nevitt of Emory University School of Law in the Stanford Law Review. We need more thinking like this to inform meaningful adaptation. #resilience #adaptation #realestate #law
Over the weekend, the Stanford Law Review published my latest Article, “The Legal Crisis Within the Climate Crisis.” This project has been in the works for over a decade, and was first inspired by my time as a U.S. Navy JAG Corps attorney working on climate adaptation at Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base and located in an area uniquely vulnerable to sea level rise. Ready for download here: https://lnkd.in/eEZBYz8e I argue that laws designed for an "Earth 1.0" will prove unworkable for a destabilized "Earth 2.0." Absent legal change, longstanding legal doctrine will cast a shadow over innovative climate adaptation measures, discouraging courageous climate action. Hence, the lurking legal crisis that is unfolding alongside the #climate crisis.
