IT'S FINALLY HERE! During your hiring process, do you ever wish you could have reached your applicants at a young age to give them advice? Here's your chance! I am thrilled to share that Ethan Allen Workforce Solutions along with the City of Poughkeepsie and Poughkeepsie High School will be hosting a Trade Fair on April 11th. We know, we know, you get invited to job fairs all the time! How is this one different!? College isn't for everyone and we want to make sure that students and parents are informed about solid career paths, and what traits companies are looking for in their employees. Manufacturing, Warehousing, Plumbing, Electrical, Automotive, Construction and other similar companies are encouraged to attend. The event will kick off with a panel discussion where an employee from your organization can share their career path from high school student into trade professional. 2nd chance employers are so critical to supporting our communities and addressing inequity in our workplaces. The Prison Policy Initiative conducted a study that showed the #1 predictor of recidivism (the tendency for convicted offenders to reoffend) was poverty. An additional supporting study by the United States Sentencing Commission concluded that if a citizen transitioning out of the prison system can find stable employment within one year of release, the recidivism rate reduces by 40%. Providing access to stable employment to those that have a criminal history needs to be a bigger part of rehabilitating those who commit crimes. It is not talked about enough, nor are there sufficient resources in the justice system currently to support it. This work has to be done, especially to combat systematic oppression of historically marginalized groups due to the racial and ethnic disparities present in the criminal justice system. 🥳Happy FriYAY, everyone!🥳 I had the privilege of attending Northwood University’s 2024 Spring Employment Fair yesterday! Traveling in Michigan during the winter can always be hit or miss with weather and I was lucky enough to be hit by a snow storm on my drive up😂 Although this delayed me from starting on time at the fair, there was still a great turn out from the students! A common theme within the students I spoke with yesterday was that most were student-athletes. I am always looking for the soft skills that college students learn in the classroom…group project collaboration, self accountability to study for a test, critical thinking, and strategic thinking…etc. But have you considered how hiring student athletes specifically might be a great plus to your organization? I found a great article on LinkedIn that I’ll link below. The author mentions 10 reasons on why you should take a second look at a student-athlete applicants: 1. Mental toughness 2. Adaptability 3. Teamwork 4. Work ethic 5. Handles pressure 6. Coachable 7. Competitor 8. Understands failure 9. Goal setters 10. Big picture and the details Through my own experience with focusing on early talent (0-3 years post undergrad) hiring the last two years for Bish's RV, Inc., I can vouch that these qualities DO make you stand out pre and post hire.
