Why do I see this all the time? It’s a easy easy thing to understand. The frame arms of the head obstruct the spray pattern so an NFPA committee decided a very very long time ago that the upright fire sprinkler head’s frame arms should be oriented with its arms parallel with the pipe below it. NFPA 13 states “Upright sprinklers shall be installed with the frame arms parallel to the branch line, unless specifically listed for other orientation.” The appendix in NFPA 13 states “The purpose of this requirement is to minimize the obstruction of the discharge pattern.” *I know their will be a fire sprinkler guy or girl out there who will see this post and want to argue because they have installed upright heads like this and/or didn’t know any better but you are wrong if you install heads like this. Period.

NFPA 13 Topic - Sprinkler Location Requirement • 9.4.1.5 Protective caps and straps - These are used to protect the sprinklers during transportation and installation. • 9.4.1.5.2 Protective caps and straps shall be removed from all sprinklers prior to the time when the sprinkler system is placed in service • 9.4.1.5.3 Protective caps and straps on all upright sprinklers or on any sprinklers installed more than 10ft above the floors shall be permitted to be removed from sprinklers immediately following their installation..

A friendly reminder that even the perfect in-rack Scheme A sprinkler installation per NFPA 30 or NFPA 30B for flammable/combustible liquids or aerosols isn't complete if your solid barriers have gaps at the longitudinal flues. Don't forget to have all the disciplines/parties coordinate with each other! I have found that sprinkler installers do not typically install the solid barriers.

Classification of Hazard. When designing a fire sprinklers system we must know the hazard classification, which is divided into several items including. 1. Light Hazards 2. A fire pump’s size is dictated by the most hydraulically demanding area of the fire protection system. In many high-rise buildings, this can be the automatic fire standpipe system demand which requires 500 gallons per minute at 100 pounds per square inch at the top of the most remote standpipe, plus 250 gpm for each additional standpipe, up to a maximum of 1,000 gpm for wet systems or 1,250 gpm for dry systems. For non high-rise buildings, the most demanding area could be any number of different hazards. Though the IBC requires buildings with a highest finished floor located more than 30 feet above the lowest fire department vehicle access to be equipped with Class III standpipes or Class I if the building is fully sprinkled, NFPA 14: Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems
