Getting help from a group of great professionals for designing and implementing innovation strategies at the regional level in the direction of the green and digital transition, with an emphasis on the paradigmatic change induced by AI.

On Friday 27 September, Pirita Lindholm, Director of ERRIN, had the pleasure of moderating a session on “Opportunities and needs for the green transition – Emphasising place-based innovation ecosystems for climate neutrality” at the European Committee of the Regions Conference on the Green Deal going local. The impressive lineup of panelists included Leena Yla-Mononen - Executive Director at the European Environmental Agency, Kurt Vandenberghe - Director General at DG CLIMA, Tuija Telén, Regional Mayor of Helsinki Uusimaa and Janne Laine, Vice President for innovation at Aalto University. Introductory key messages included the following points: 🔹The European innovation ecosystem is fragmented, as highlighted by the Draghi report. Connected place-based innovation ecosystems are a key ingredient of Europe’s competitiveness. 🔸A more targeted support landscape for innovation ecosystems is needed.  🔹Learning from support that has worked well is essential, such as the #EU Missions. Missions provide directionality to R&I investments and accelerate the implementation of the green deal objectives. A number of points for the new European Commission and the next #MFF & #FP10 were outlined: 🔹Policies and their associated instruments must be better coordinated and clearer to ensure that cities and regions can make full use of them to become incubators of systemic solutions. 🔸Invest in digitalisation and ways to use existing knowledge. 🔹Enhance support for place-based innovation ecosystems. 🔸Connect stakeholders within ecosystems to avoid parallel discussions. 🇪🇺 Update: Strategic Plan 2025-2027 Unveiled! It's been a privilege to have played a role in the re-design that will shape the future of research and innovation, aiming to enhance future of Europe, and improving efficiency and focus resources for greater impact 🌍💡   Here’s what stands out:   1. Simplified Impact Logic: The approach now focuses on expected impacts to drive clarity and effectiveness. 2. Three Key Strategic Orientations: Embracing the EU's top priorities, strategic orientations are condensed into three interconnected pillars: (i) the Green Transition, (ii) the Digital Transition, and (iii) fostering a Resilient, Competitive, Inclusive, and Democratic Europe. 3. Overarching Principles: Principles such as 'open strategic autonomy' and 'securing Europe's leading role in critical technologies' are now embedded across the strategic plan, ensuring a cohesive vision across all key areas. 4. Strengthened Pillar Coverage: Pillar I (Excellent Science), Pillar III (Innovative Europe), and Widening Participation and Strengthening the ERA are now harmonized for better consistency and effectiveness. 5. Responding to Global Developments: The plan is updated to reflect the latest geopolitical shifts and security concerns, ensuring Europe remains agile and resilient. 6. New Initiatives: From the New European Bauhaus to nine European Partnerships, Europe will be forging ahead with innovative collaborations and initiatives. 7. Mission Deployment: Progress on EU Missions have been evaluated and concrete steps are outlined to maximize the impact moving forward.   Streamlining Partnerships for Impact: Horizon Europe has undertaken a significant reform, reducing partnerships from 120 in Horizon 2020 to just 49 in the new strategic plan. I am proud to be involved in this effort, aiming to enhance efficiency and focus resources for greater impact.   Fostering Collaborative Efforts: During the initial strategic planning phase, I've had the opportunity to contribute to shaping institutionalized European Partnerships, which receives the majority of the partnership budget. This process highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving green and digital transitions while bolstering EU resilience.   A Collective Contribution: As we allocate resources towards R&I initiatives supporting the European Green Deal, resilience, and digital objectives, it's heartening to see the impact of our collective efforts.   I'm grateful to have been part of this journey toward a more sustainable and innovative Europe. #impact #innovation #sustainability https://lnkd.in/ejq-Wtyf

The second co-funded call of this EU Partnership pools national and regional financial resources through the participation of 38 funding organisations from 26 countries combined with the contribution from the European Union. The total estimated budget is about EUR 40 million. The plan, announced at the flagship Research and Innovation Days, sets out three key strategic orientations for EU's research and innovation funding for the last three years of the programme (2025-2027): 🔔 Green transition; 🔔Digital transition; 🔔A more resilient, competitive, inclusive and democratic Europe. These orientations aim to address key global challenges such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, the digital transition and an ageing population. The strategic plan raises the ambition of Horizon Europe on #biodiversity and commits to a target of 10% of the Horizon Europe's total budget for 2025-2027 dedicated to biodiversity-related topics. This new commitment complements existing targets for climate expenditure (35% over the lifetime of Horizon Europe) and main digital activities (€13 billion over the same period).
