Reflecting on the recent graduation ceremonies of many secondary schools and the anticipated WAEC results that will soon be released coupled with the admission processing into most Private Universities, it dawned on me to share this experience and know the thoughts of fellow tutors in higher institutions on the idea of parents forcing children to study certain courses. With my few years as a lecturer, I have seen some students struggle with their course and these are the students that turn out to be truant and you will keep wondering why this attitude. It is easy for those lecturers teaching small group to identify the Truants in class compared to a large class. My conversation with some had made me realize the errors of some parents in the choice of course of study. Some were able to change their attitude after much counseling by getting serious with the course and eventually graduated with good grades. But some still struggled and found it hard to change to another course of study. Our dear Parents, let's do well to know the strengths of our children and don't impose your choice and desires on them. We are to guide them. Yet more record breaking results, this time from our fantastic GCSE students! This year’s cohort of 146 Year 11s sat 1,497 GCSE exams across 21 different subjects, securing excellent results: 86% grades 7-9 (equivalent to A-A*), 70% grades 8-9 (equivalent to A*) and 44% at the highest possible grade 9. Notably, RGS has 1% of the students in the UK who achieved all 9s A total of 57 students achieved a remarkable set of 11 GCSEs and almost half of all grades were the highest possible achievable - grade 9. Perhaps most impressive of all, RGS GCSE results place it in the top 1% of schools in the country for its ‘value added’ for GCSEs. Chris Quayle, RGS’s Deputy Head (Academic) who leads the school’s approach to learning and teaching, said: “Reflecting on the past year as a whole, all Year 11 students should be proud of what they have achieved as individually they have earned their success and have collectively secured yet another record-breaking year of RGS GCSE results.” Geoffrey Stanford, RGS’s Headmaster added: “Our Year 11 students are truly phenomenal.
