Roland Barth suggests there are four types of relationships among school leaders and teachers: 1. Parallel: working side by side, minimal interaction with one another 2. Competitive: working side by side, withholding knowledge from each other 3. Congenial: working side by side, personal and friendly 4. Collegial: a deeper and more meaningful congenial relationship that is neither parallel nor competitive In the course, Becoming an Effective School Leader, we focus on the fourth relationship: Collegiality. How does Roland Barth define collegiality among school leaders and teachers? -   They talk about their practice -   They share knowledge -   They observe one another -   They encourage one another To develop collegiality, a school leader must: -   State expectations of collegiality -   Model collegiality -   Reward collegiality -   Protect those who engage in collegiality. I've been reflecting on our improvement efforts recently as we begin a new strategic plan. One of the highlights has been our work with Jason Clarke, who facilitated a conversation around our values. This work continues to shape our school in a positive way from fostering cohesion and driving curriculum and professional practice, through to governance decision making and habits.
