Social media addiction is a real and recognized disease, with teens being most vulnerable to its negative impacts on mental health and self esteem. “It’s not hyperbolic to compare this to any other substance use disorder where you have a beginning that is seemingly innocuous. It doesn’t seem risky,” explained Dr. Adam Scioli, Chief Medical Officer at Caron Treatment Centers. Thank you NBC 6 South Florida and Roxanne Vargas for exploring the dangers of social media and emphasizing how teens are most vulnerable to its negative impacts. Read more: https://lnkd.in/esd3NMyp

Cute and kind... Who would have thought such a simple wellbeing check-in could port directly to our open and vulnerable inner-child's needs. In mental health first aid, approaching the person whom you are concerned might be experiencing a mental health issue is often a challenging first step. Let's be real, in Australia we are a mob of "How ya goings?"..."Yeah good thanks" 👍 🇦🇺 Having the creativity to ask in alternate ways can often elicit a different response. You might like to try some of these instead of "How are you?" * How have things been recently? * What's on your mind right now? * How are you taking care of yourself these days? * What's something you enjoyed recently? * Do you want to grab a coffee later? * What's one thing you're looking forward to? * Did anything make you smile today? * Is there anything you need right now? As we know, early intervention of mental health problems can lead to better outcomes in the long run. ...and for those that find Elmo a pain in the ass like me, I'll be taking up Cookie monster's offer to bring cookies and of course...I'm inviting the Count to do what he does best! 😉🧛♂️ Mental Health First Aid® Australia Wellceum #mentalhealthfirstaid #ruok #psychologicalhealthandsafety
Elmo asked social media users how they were doing. The responses were overwhelming

The detachment among the real people is being replaced by internet and social media 📱👨💻 In 2017, I presented a research paper at an international conference titled, “Social Media: Way to isolation or way to connect”. 🛜 I had to dig deeper to find enough examples around me. Back those days, Facebook a addiction was still a new concept evolving to prove its theory. 👻 But now, this addiction is very common. Nowadays, I won’t say that it’s only restricted to Facebook Addiction. It has surpassed all the levels and turned into Social Media Addiction. 🎯 Youngsters are stuck with their social media accounts 🎯 Constantly seek for acceptance and compliments online 🎯 Feel disturbed when they get trolled 🎯 Keeps checking social media profiles every now and then 🎯 Stalks other users’ social media handles every now and other 🎯 Compares themselves with others 🎯. Disillusioned thinking reel life is real life Have you measured the requirement of life coaches, psychologists or therapists these days? Instead of real conversation, people are sharing more through reel conversation giving more food to the digital stalkers. Humans are losing the confidence and emotional quotient to communicate in the real time. The importance of a real conversation is oblivious at the moment. PS — When was the last you enjoyed a conversation with someone and ditched your phone for 2-3 hours? You can also subtly share your recent dating story too 😂 Follow Moumita Biswas for more interesting stories. As a seasoned psychologist, I've witnessed firsthand the impact of social media on mental health. The recent Facebook and Instagram outage brought to light an interesting phenomenon: our dependency on these platforms for validation and connection. It's not just about checking likes or comments; it's about feeling seen and heard in a world that often feels chaotic. I've had clients express feelings of anxiety and even withdrawal during the outage, highlighting the deep-rooted attachment many have to these platforms. Think about it like this: Imagine you're at a party where everyone is chatting and laughing, but suddenly the lights go out, and the room falls silent. That's what it felt like for millions when Facebook and Instagram went dark. We've become accustomed to using these platforms as our social playgrounds, and when they're taken away, it's like we've lost our digital social circle. This outage serves as a reminder to diversify our sources of connection and validation, whether it's through face-to-face interactions, phone calls, or other social platforms. Let's use this moment to prioritize real connections over digital ones. #SocialMediaDetox #OfflineIsTheNewLuxury #digitalwellness

I worry about our collective mental health and well-being. I worry about what this is doing to our brain chemistry — if the use of social media and all the hate therein is fundamentally changing our brains at a molecular level that will get passed down to the next generations. You are wasting your 5 hours on social media apps daily. 🤐🤐 Well according to the latest report, over 210 million people are social media addicts, and the most critical thing is that 40% of them are teenagers. Isn’t that alarming? 🙄🙄 Let’s talk about a few latest statistics that show us the huge impact of cellular phones and social media on our lives. ✅There are more than 4.62 social media users worldwide. ✅500 million Instagram stories are being uploaded daily. ✅In 2023 almost 91% of teenagers have at least two social media accounts. If you are feeling you are also one of them, you should take immediate precautions to get over this addiction like: ✅Turn off all notifications: Turning off notifications will prevent you from checking your phone again and again whenever you hear a notification sound. ✅Identify which app you’re using most: With screen time management in your phone settings, you can find out which app is consuming your time. ✅Set limit on that app: After identifying the app, set a time limit on that app. After a limited time, the app will automatically stop. ✅Find a new hobby: To avoid social media addiction and decrease your screen time, you should find interesting hobbies to keep yourself busy, distract yourself from cell phones ✅Delete the Social Media Apps: If you feel reluctant to delete your social media apps, be sure that this is a temporary measure to limit your screen time and that you are deleting your social media applications from your mobiles, not your accounts. ✅Get an actual alarm clock: It is observed that almost 90% of people check their phones as soon as they wake up to see the time and after seeing the time, they start checking other apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. To avoid cell phones in the morning, buy an actual alarm clock to get up. P.S= What is your screen time daily? For reading complete article, click the link below

With any number of disturbing social media 'trends' like this that prey on people's desire for attention, drama and relationship insecurities - it's any wonder why mental health and substance abuse strategies are at the top of the list for most employers. Remember that the goal of organizational wellbeing is to treat 'the whole person' that comes to work...and that also means the moms and dads that may be dealing with these kinds of issues with their teens, perhaps not just the younger generations in the workforce that may fall prey to them. #emotionalwellness #emotionalwellbeing #emotionalhealth #socialmediaimpact https://lnkd.in/ex48Gb2Q

Dear Mark has one objective: Get Mark Zuckerberg to change Instagram for the better by adding the simple feature of automatically tagging images that use an Instagram filter as #filteredimage. Individuals, especially our youth, are comparing themselves to altered images online which negatively impacts mental health, increasing the risk of anxiety, body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, depression, and suicidal thoughts. #filteredimage is a necessary, yet simple way to positively impact humanity and generations to come. Support this initiative by visiting Dear Mark's website and Instagram! Share a post or two. Until #filteredimage becomes a reality, we still have to deal with online comparisons. The dangers of social media addiction, especially its impact on teen mental health and self-esteem, are very real. Dr. Adam Scioli's perspective on likening social media addiction to substance use disorders is a stark reminder of its potential risks. Thank you for shedding light on this critical topic.
