💡 As we talk about grantmaking strategies and priorities, let's ask ourselves: Are we operating in ways that genuinely uplift our nonprofit partners? Or are we still relying on outdated conventional norms that limit their potential? Trust-based philanthropy flips the script on conventional philanthropy by promoting a culture of sharing power, centering relationships, and fostering mutual accountability. Ready to make a shift in your grantmaking practice? Download the "Trust-Based Philanthropy vs. Conventional Grantmaking" guide below!

Philanthropy POLL RESULTS Here’s what worries you most about your philanthropy programmes… The top 2 worries were: 1. Pipeline not big enough 2. Unrealistic targets Closely followed by: 3. No case for support The last one surprised me. Only one person said their team’s skills and experience worried them about their programme. This seems like a great thing…lots of skilled philanthropy professionals out there… but it’s not what I hear or have experienced. Maybe it was just that it wasn’t people’s No.1 worry as you could only pick one. My thanks to those of you who voted. It really helps to see what’s on your mind so I can contribute some answers to try and alleviate some of the worry. I’ll be sharing some ideas tomorrow and in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your reactions to the results.

A commitment to the core values of trust-based philanthropy leads to more effective, and human-centered practices in philanthropy. I am so excited to see the recent supplement in the Stanford Social Innovation Review covering the rise, importance, and future of trust-based philanthropy. Congratulations to the authors for putting together an engaging and comprehensive case for trust-based practices, including National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) members and partners Jamie Allison, Carrie Avery, Elizabeth Bonner, Shaady Salehi, Nat Chioke Williams, and Sarah Walczyk. In philanthropy, meaningful change is the aim and the promise. Yet, as Shaady eloquently puts it in her article: “When philanthropy holds the reins this tightly, it cannot create the conditions necessary to advance social change.” Embracing a trust-based approach and shifting power to communities means we can achieve so much more.

Seasoned philanthropy executive, supporting for-purpose leaders to create a just, fair society. Strategic, insightful and kind.
🌟 Let's Talk Trust and Impact in Philanthropy! 🌟 Join the conversation on how we can ensure that philanthropy and grant-giving remain relevant and effective. 💡 When discussing trust-based philanthropy, one common concern arises: does prioritizing trust mean sacrificing impact? The truth is, trust-based philanthropy sees impact as an essential component, not a separate entity. It acknowledges that excessive control by funders doesn't necessarily lead to greater impact. Instead, it aims to address power imbalances in the funder-fundee relationship. 🔍 Take, for instance, the persistent belief that low overheads equate to higher impact. This myth often overshadows the true drivers of success in philanthropy. 📖 Kevin Starr touched upon these principles, albeit under a different name, in his 2015 SSIR article. In his "Seven Commandments of Funding," he emphasises the primacy of impact while debunking the overhead myth. Let's challenge the status quo and explore how trust-based philanthropy can pave the way for more meaningful and impactful giving. Check out Kevin Starr's article for further insights: https://lnkd.in/gvsGasPu #Philanthropy #TrustBasedGiving #ImpactMatters #RedefiningPhilanthropy #TrustAndImpact #SocialImpact #Funding #Nonprofits #KevinStarr #SSIR
💡 Is it time to ditch written reports from nonprofits and have a conversation instead?💡 Fascinating Philanthropy Australia webinar today with Brenda Solarzano from the Headwaters Foundation in Montana on trust-based philanthropy. What does trust-based philanthropy mean in practice? Here’s six key practices for funders: ✅ Give multi-year, unrestricted funding ✅ Do your homework ✅ Simplify and streamline paperwork ✅ Be transparent and responsive ✅ Solicit and act on feedback ✅ Offer support beyond funding It’s all about creating an environment where you can learn with and from your grantees – and build a relationship based on trust and openness. Learning together leads to better, long-term outcomes for all. ✳ One simple tip - have conversations with your grantees instead of paper reports. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE PHILANTHROPY LAB! A place for philanthropic funders to come together in pursut of the Lab's North Star: To support economies in service to life. https://lnkd.in/gURPMU7x At John Ellerman Foundation, we have been longstanding supporters of the Philanthropy Lab because it represents an exciting and ambitious approach that supports funders to collaborate and work together in new, more dynamic ways. It provides a space where funders can think through how to tackle the root causes of much of what our funding tries to address. The Lab’s North Star, to create economies in service to life, is hugely supportive of work we are already doing and planning across our grantmaking and investing at John Ellerman Foundation. We are really enjoying working in community to build out the principles and approach of the Lab, as well as learning from many different speakers on a range of topics, and working together on the Lab’s three workstreams of supporting transformative nature right’s work, shifting the narrative around the tax system so that it can better protect and restore nature, and considering our options to invest in ways that go beyond the traditional ESG investing approaches. Ultimately the Lab represents a learning opportunity for us and has supported us to think about how to address root causes of systemic challenges as funders. It has been a welcome opportunity for challenging our own thinking on the art of the possible as funders in supporting lasting and transformational environmental systems change. This feels vital and affirming given the immense existential environmental and societal challenges that we face. The Lab allows us to rise to these challenges decisively and meaningfully in collaboration with others. FInd out more on the website, including how to join! https://lnkd.in/gURPMU7x #NewEconomy #Philanthropy #GreenFunders #EnvironmentalPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyLab Hannah Temple | Andres Roberts | Stella McLeod McKenna
