Trust-Based Philanthropy Project
Philanthropy
A peer-to-peer funder initiative addressing the power imbalances between foundations and nonprofits
About us
The Trust-Based Philanthropy Project is a five-year, peer-to-peer funder initiative to address the inherent power imbalances between foundations and nonprofits. We invite foundations to examine their grantmaking values and practices through a trust-based lens, including proactively working to cede power and control toward a more equitable nonprofit-funder ecosystem.

Trust-based philanthropy is much more than unrestricted grants and streamlined paperwork. At its core, the approach is about recognizing and addressing power imbalances in service of a healthier, more equitable, and more impactful #nonprofit sector. This requires a commitment to relationships based on transparency and mutual learning – both internally within our organizations and externally with grantee partners. In this #throwbackthursday recording Forefront (Illinois) examines #trustbasedphilanthropy beyond the most well-known grantmaking practices, revealing the importance of centering power-sharing and equity across every dimension of our work. 📺 Watch the full webinar below and share what resonates with you in the comments.

"Trust-based philanthropy is not about walking away. It's about being in relationship being in difficult conversations together and having the humility to learn and be together. I've learned so much with our partners and from our partners... because we're in real relationships now, they tell us things that we wouldn't have known otherwise that make us better." -Jamie Allison | Walter & Elise Haas Fund Earlier this month, Jamie Allison, executive director of the Walter & Elise Haas Fund sat down with the "Dreaming in Color" podcast (The Bridgespan Group) to discuss #trustbasedphilanthropy and its transformative impact on communities, particularly for leaders of color. Give it a listen below and let us know what gems resonated with you ✨ .
