About a quarter of a million mothers with young children have left their jobs because of difficulties with balancing work and childcare, according to a report by the Fawcett Society, which is calling for the end of the “motherhood penalty.” A lack of flexible working arrangements and affordable childcare combined with “outdated and toxic attitudes around motherhood” were holding women back. The report also found that too many women are stuck in roles that are below their capabilities, missing out on opportunities to progress their careers.

What is the motherhood penalty? The motherhood penalty is the price women pay for growing their families while they’re in the workforce. Statistics show that moms in the workforce are less likely to be chosen for new roles and promotions, will earn lower salaries, and be held to a higher standard than fathers and non-mothers. According to a Harvard study, hiring managers are less likely to hire mothers than women who don’t have kids. I was shocked at these results. CT is number 1 and I have mixed feelings. The reasons for our top spot are: ➡️ 12 weeks of paid family leave (that we’re specifically taxed for) ➡️ An average income over $80k, making child care “affordable” ➡️ Highly rated public schools NGL, this gave me the ick. As a resident… I know the truth: ❎ If you’re wealthy enough, you can afford child care here (I, a middle class resident, cannot) ❎ If you’re wealthy enough, you can afford the astronomical taxes here ❎ If you live in the wealthy parts of the state, you have access to great schools ❎ That “average income” is a balance of the handful of SUPER wealthy towns, and the majority middle/low class towns. Data like this is one way to look at a state’s “livability” for families, but there’s more to the story. If you asked me, eh 3/10 wouldn’t recommend. Did your state make the list? ⬇️

This shakes me to my core. It demonstrates just how much more we need to do - on a macro and micro level. The government needs to be doing more but businesses also need to do more to pave the way. For example, they need to be challenging the process by recognising when women are working below their level of capability and encouraging them to step up in a flexible way that allows for them to also meet their parental duties. Flexibility means different things to different people. Offering hybrid working is great but it’s not enough. Ask your people (women and men!) what working flexibly means to them. And then rethink systems, processes, and people/role structures to allow for this to happen. Thankful that at Hilton, we are really leaning into the need to attract, retain and grow our female workforce.

Society celebrates motherhood through extensive commercial campaigns, endless products and public messages, but there lies a disconcerting underbelly of policies and practices that systematically undermine the well-being and career prospects of mothers. Mothers forced to leave jobs due to childcare struggles A report by the Fawcett Society reveals that around 250,000 mothers with young children have left their jobs due to difficulties in balancing work and childcare. The lack of flexible working arrangements and affordable childcare, along with outdated attitudes towards motherhood, have hindered women's progress, the report said. The survey of 3,000 working parents of preschoolers found that one in five working mothers has considered leaving their job due to such challenges. The poll also highlighted that 75% of working parents take unpaid leave for childcare, with higher rates among non-white women and single mothers. Jane Lorigan, the chief executive of Totaljobs, the recruitment firm that was also involved in conducting the survey, pointed to critical labour shortages in the UK economy and warned that the pressures of childcare could ultimately have a longer-term impact on an ever-shrinking workforce. “There are more mothers in the workplace than ever before, and businesses need to create an environment where they can flourish,” said Lorigan. “Not only do working parents need more support, but we need to ensure this support extends to the people who need it the most.” Zoe Wood #HR #HumanResources #workforce #motherhood #workingmothers #childcare #WorkLifeBalance
