An interesting article. :) Zaid Ibrahim @zaidibrahim Langkawi and Phuket Many reasons have been offered why Phuket is the preferred tourist destination over Langkawi. The answer is fun. Phuket is a place that gives you the experience of having fun. There are many shades of fun, of course, but that’s why Phuket is Phuket. It does not define or limit the fun that you may partake in or prefer. The visitors decide on the many things they want to do there. It’s a holiday place, so naturally, people want to go to a place that offers them a variety. They are there to enjoy themselves Langkawi is the most beautiful island; make no mistake, but unfortunately, it is in Malaysia. Here, having fun is frowned upon. Fun is immoral to some people. Life should not be enjoyed in a certain way as it may result in immorality or undesirable sinful behaviour. That’s why we have problems with concerts, performing arts, fashion shows and beauty contests. We have issues with nightclubs, etc We have no Taylor Swift and no mega performances, despite the benefits such concerts bring to the economy How is it that a progressive 21st-century country that describes itself as modern becomes hostage to some religious preachers who want to ban everything enjoyable? Why are we held hostage by those who wish to kill fun and by doing so, slowly decapitate our economy and tourism business I suggest the Cabinet seriously consider pushing back this conservative thinking from taking a stronger hold in the country. The politicians should not be scared of reversing the preachers' expanding influence. They need to fight back. Look at Saudi Arabia. They know the oil will not last forever. So they move to modernise the country. They are catching up with other countries to develop the global business of tourism and sport. Of course, they are fortunate to have a visionary leader/ king, Muhammad Bin Salman. But we also have a modern-thinking progressive King in Sultan Ibrahim. The govt now has an ally who can transform the country to be like Dubai or Singapore. Don’t waste the opportunity. Don’t be timid. More importantly, such transformation not only benefits the economy but changes the character of our people. What we discovered in last 23 years, while working for #London, #Vienna, #Spain, #Poland, #Turkey, #Lithunia, #WestBengal and many more, is very interesting: A regular people has just 3 countries/cities on his/her mind: First one is own country/city, of course. Second one is the place you wanna go to holiday. Example, a British family could have 2 weeks holiday in #Antalya, Turkey with half cost compared to south of #Spain. Or plan to go to Nepal to climb the #MountEverest for $60k. One of a kind thing in life. Third one is a personal reason, your daughter will apply to #UniversityofAmsterdam. Or you have business relations like textile manufacturers mainly #Bangladesh, #Cairo, #İstanbul or #Guangzhou. 3 Countries or cities. That’s it! Super small capacity to be a memorable place against a big competition. So, what NOT to be done? First, Don’t do what you have done in 20 years ago, - Similar advertisings showing see, sand & sun. - Pointless PR efforts expecting to get attention. - Fairs & exhibitions, spending a week and millions aiming you will be differentiated from others, which won’t happen. Sad but true. Ok, what to do right thing? - Start to write your purpose, no more than just 50 characters, not words. In the end it’s all about more people and more business to attract from the world. But make no mistake. Everyone is fighting for it. So be super specific about what do you really want! - Continue with your pains. Be clear and honest. Nowhere is pure perfect. They have their authentic assets, problems. Place branding is problem, not a solution. Idea is not to hump on quick and dirty solutions. But be aware of them and have smart, sustainable, charming roadmap for a at least a decade. - Then may be call us! We love to meet new people, discover and help to overcome challenges.
