The Ostfeld lab is hiring! They just received an NSF RAPID grant to examine the effects of spongy moth defoliation on ticks. Massive defoliation (esp. on oaks) has changed the look of the forest and the additional light and dryness may be impacting ticks. Two project assistants will be hired within the next three weeks to look at tick survival in soil core enclosures. The job runs from August 5-November 15 in Millbrook, NY. Please share this opportunity widely and encourage applicants to submit an application ASAP. Photo credit: M. Fargione #ecology #jobopportunity https://lnkd.in/eCrnPJR6

It's all about the details! Did you know that quolls use scat latrines to mark their territories? These fascinating creatures leave their droppings in specific areas known as latrines, often returning repeatedly to the same latrine sites. This behaviour offers valuable insights into their habitat use. Monitoring these latrines can aid conservationists in tracking quoll populations and understanding their movements. For environmental scientists, this adds a whole new dimension to describing their job roles! 💩 #QuollConservation #WildlifeResearch #QuollSoc

A tub of leaf litter, with rotten logs, surrounded by teams of bright young scientists searching for minibeasts, could be the start of a conservationist's lifelong passion. Minibeasts as a topic provides such a diverse range of experiences. Young scientists can compare, contrast and question specific features and behaviours ❓️ They can create their own content and share their imaginings of minibeasts- as Arthur the spider is evidence of 🕷 Counting and data handling can be applied in a meaningful context 📊 The opportunity to focus, for however long they feel comfortable, offers a chance to reset and de-stress😌 Through this experience I believe it allows young people to develop respect for animals which may go unnoticed or overlooked despite their importance to our survival 🌍 The conversations and questions around a simple tub of leaf litter, and dead logs has the potential to spark a deep respect for the minibeasts we share our world with. #natureeducation #outdoorlearning #youngscientists #minibeasts

Are you interested in digitising historical datasets? Long-term datasets are some of the most valuable assets in ecology and environmental science. Yet many such datasets remain effectively inaccessible because they are not publicly shared or, more concerningly, only exist in non-digital or obsolete formats. Within this job you would seek to apply best practices in data management to digitise and FAIRify historical (1922 - 1950) data on the breeding ecology of hole-nesting birds, which are currently stored as paper ledgers in the archives of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). Read the vacancy of this position as data digitisation assistant and apply until 11 August: https://lnkd.in/ebVi69Bd #vacancy #ecology #digitisation #datasets

Director @ Thermal Vision Research & Thermal Vision Ecology | FLIR R&D Technical Partner | Follow for thermal imaging content
🦇 Ecology Webinar Recording! We had a lot of fun running this webinar for all of our ecology contacts. We covered all the useful features we've been posting about such as emergence detection and flight path tracking, as well as giving a run down of what the hiring journey looks like. Dr Liat Wicks had great input of an ecologists perspective and how to incorporate thermal into your surveys. Give it a watch and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/eXR6MAY2

Being part of the Thermal Vision Ecology team as their Technical Consultant has really made me realise that if I hadn’t started a career in ecology, I should have gone into this field! The ecology kit we provide to the environmental sector has numerous benefits, but one that got me hooked very early on was the ability to automate the analysis of hrs of thermal footage accurately. Here is a little example for you - 10mins of thermal recording was analysed by the software in approximately 4 mins. 💡If your average bat survey generates 90 mins of footage, rather than watch it all back in realtime, it can be analysed with Research Studio software in approx 36 mins - all whilst you do something else! 💡Then you scroll to the event peaks (see below) and determine whether it is a bat or not. Job done! But that’s not all …. You can draw multiple regions of interest around potential roost features or areas of your target, and the software will run simultaneous analysis on them all! Below is a short clip of a barn surveyed recently, I focused on a beam cavity and drew an ROI around it. The analysis captures both emergence (indicated by the 1st peak on the graph) and also if a bat flies into the ROI, but it doesn’t trigger any another time. We train you fully in use if the kit and the analysis techniques. Do get in touch with us if you want to know more! 🦇 #thermalimaging #thermalvisionresearch #batsurveyanalysis #dataanalysis
