What's happening: Latin music has surged to become the fastest-growing genre on U.S. streaming platforms midway through 2024, driven by a 15.1% increase in streams compared to last year, according to a recent report from Luminate. Regional Mexican music, in particular, has spearheaded this growth with over 13 billion streams and a staggering 36.9% year-over-year rise, making it the largest Latin subgenre. Artists like Peso Pluma, Fuerza Regida, Junior H, and Bad Bunny dominate the charts, each amassing over 100 million streams in the past six months. Marcos Juarez of Pandora attributes this meteoric rise to a cultural movement where Latinidad enjoys unprecedented visibility, marking a significant shift in mainstream music consumption patterns across the U.S. Notably, cities like Los Angeles exemplify this trend, where Latin tracks hold 16 of Apple Music’s top 25 spots, underscoring Latin music's profound impact on today's music landscape. https://brnw.ch/21wLqK5 #LatinoBuzz

Covering the music business from STREAMSTATS’ Dr. Music. Latin music is gaining more and more popularity around the world, with Bad Bunny, Karol G and Anitta just some of the artists to have become international sensations in recent years. This is partly thanks to streaming, which has improved access to music generally and made it easier to discover new artists. But the shift is likely also due to artist collaborations, which have helped established artists to “remain relevant” while keeping the genre evolving. This he chart shows more than 99 percent of the Latin music listened to in 2023 was downloaded or streamed online; only 0.5 percent of all of the genre's music was purchased in the form of a physical album. This is a stark contrast to the other 11 genres where jazz saw 24.2 percent of total album-equivalent consumption purchased in a hard copy form, World music saw 23.4 percent and rock saw 18.1 percent. Latin music listeners are also likely to enjoy the genre through video streams, with 8.5 percent of total album-equivalent consumption corresponding to this format. Only dance/electronic music listeners were more likely to consume music by video, at 9.1 percent.

Tyla’s Water was first heard publicly at Spotify’s Greasy Tunes last year in July 2023. Half a year later, it has just won the a Grammy for Best African Music Performance. An incredible story. There is another sub- story to this win which is important to consider as African music goes global. The importance of the inaugural winner of the Best African Music Performance being someone with a song that cannot be described as quintessentially Afrobeats (Still not a fan of the tag) cannot be understated. The tag although helpful ito marketing music from the continent, tends to box African creativity into what is essentially a reimagined “World Music” category. Tyla’s win is important as it breaks away from this and showcases that African music does not sound one specific way. It’s the perfect blend of familiarity and authenticity without playing into the restrictive box. Africans make any and all kinds of different music and this diversity has to be respected. It is an advantage. Reducing the genre diversity we have into one marketing centric super genre is not helpful in the long run and does damage to our ability to self actualise. This win is a critical start in breaking away from this.

The latest music-industry figure to criticise TikTok over its licensing deals is Emmanuel de Buretel, president of independent firm Because Music. He wrote a guest column for French newspaper Le Monde setting out his view that “if TikTok wants to make a living from music, it must respect it”. The column mirrors many of the criticisms of TikTok made by Universal Music Group, including its low payments (“only 1% to 2% of revenue for music labels and artists comes from TikTok, while around 30% to 40% (depending on the label) comes from Spotify, which is a measure of the extent of the problem”). De Buretel also claimed that “TikTok is allowing its platform to be flooded with music recordings generated by artificial intelligence, by developing tools to encourage them”, and took some potshots at its recommendation algorithm too.
