The Silent Crisis: Our Nursing Homes Are in Danger I want to shed light on a growing crisis that's not getting the attention it deserves - the severe shortage of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and staff in our skilled nursing homes. These dedicated professionals are the backbone of long-term care. They provide the hands-on support our most vulnerable citizens need to live with dignity. But they're leaving the profession in droves, and it's putting both our seniors and the entire healthcare system at risk. The reasons are complex: Low wages and benefits Burnout from short staffing and high-acuity residents Limited career advancement opportunities Lack of respect for the vital role they play This isn't just a problem for the nursing home industry. As the population ages, we'll all be impacted. Our parents, grandparents, and eventually ourselves will need these services. Do we want a system where there's no one to care for those who cared for us? We need action: Better compensation and benefits to attract and retain staff Technology to improve efficiency and reduce burnout Career ladders and education support to advance skills A shift in culture to truly value these critical caregivers This is a call to healthcare leaders, policymakers, and anyone who cares about the future of long-term care. Nursing Home Administrators carry a tremendously heavy burden in today's climate and are certainly not immune to their own job burnout. Wisconsin is taking proactive steps to help medical professionals secure Administrator licenses faster so facilities can avoid operational deficiencies that come from vacant Administrator positions. While this is certainly a positive step in addressing the issue, a crucial pathway to reducing burnout for nurse staff and Administrators alike is to automate the manual processes that hold them hostage throughout the workday to begin with. #longtermcare #skillednursing #LNHA #Smartlinx

I’m sure by now most all of us have heard about the Iowa nurse who has been criminally charged for failing to clear the airway of a nursing home resident who later died. Many of us have probably read the article, and a few of us, me included, have pulled the 2567 to review the state survey agency’s findings. Many questions come to mind when reviewing the articles and the statement of deficiencies. “How did this happen” may be the first one on your mind. How does a nurse go against the aides’ multiple requests to suction the resident? Why did this nurse tell state surveyors that she was told she didn’t have to do anything with his tracheostomy? Was there another nurse on shift at that time? What is the process for verification of code status? Was this an agency nurse? The biggest question I have is surrounding something we as nurse leaders have been talking about for years now – competencies. Was this LPN even trained and deemed competent to provide the necessary tracheostomy care to this patient? Going out on a limb here, but I interpret her statement of being told she wouldn’t have to do anything with the tracheostomy as acknowledgement that administration knew that a) she wasn’t trained to perform this level of care or b) she wasn’t comfortable providing this level of care. As a certified legal nurse consultant, I would be asking for proof of competencies related to tracheostomy care not only on the LPN involved in this case, but all other nursing staff that currently work, or worked during that time period in 2023. Professor Nina Kohn Speaks with MLive on the State of Nursing Homes in Michigan Professor Nina Kohn discussed legal aspects of nursing home licensure and patient rights with MLive for the article “Michigan used to shut down its worst nursing homes. Then it stopped.” The article takes an extensive review of nursing homes in Michigan and how the licensing, inspection, and closure of underperforming nursing homes have changed over time. Regarding closing underperforming nursing homes, Kohn said states have a “dormant ability to use existing state law to get the worst actors out of the system. And the thing we’ve seen is states not using their powers.” She continued “What you’re doing when you close a nursing home that has shown it’s incapable of necessary care is you’re protecting the most vulnerable people in your community. Certainly, moving is not what most residents look forward to. It can have ramifications. But if you keep these facilities open, you’re just perpetuating the cycle of bringing in more people to be victimized.” Kohn notes that states’ power to license nursing homes could be an effective way to get the worst companies to improve or shut down if they don’t. “Licensure, unfortunately, in many states, has become sort of paper pushing or rubber stamp function,” she said. https://lnkd.in/eK83bJS4 This is a good starting point.However resident health needs assessment such as total dependency for mobility, daily personal care , feeding to mention this few may impact care provided to residents is out of the 100 residents with only 3 to 6 nurses there are 30 residents fully dependent. Therefore great to see the current as a minimum to encourage care home to strive above the minimum.
