This is unbelievable, I'm STILL unemployed. ARE YOU HIRING IN NORTHERN MAINE or 100% work from home? If so, please EMAIL ME, let's talk. About me: BS in chemistry, Master's in water resources and hydrology, Graduate Certificate in geographic information systems (GIS) focusing on ESRI ArcGIS. 25 years of professional work. Spread around 30 different industries. SUPER TIRED of getting laid off every 8 months, partially disabled with medical expenses on top of regular adult responsibilities - but can still haul a 40-lb box up a flight of stairs, seeking a SOLID CAREER OPTION not just a place to stay busy for the next six months. Versatile, easily trainable, take criticism well, like to diversify and cross train, jack-of-all-trades, willing to try something different or learn something new as needed, motivated, loyal to you if you'll be equally loyal to me, living in northern Maine and expecting to stay here. Seeking: Full time, permanent position with LESS physical stress than most of my previous roles (for medical reasons). I'm not super picky about the specific role or industry, but here are some examples... Administrative, office support/management, project coordinator, chemistry lab work, technical writing (NOT for social media, blogs, or SEO though), pharmacy technician (currently uncertified), optometrist (currently uncertified), GIS mapping/analysis (no programming experience though), customer service, non-IT tech support, or similar kind of role. I have been with my agency off and on since the 1990s. Depending on how I want to craft my origin story, I either started off as an intern at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, MA or a GS-1421-5 Archives Technician/ student temp at Archives II in College Park, MD. Somewhere between then and now, I made it a career goal to become a GS-12 and last year, I reached it. Here I will share my thoughts and observations to those of you outside of the agency interested in an archival career. I've already shared my thoughts with those who follow me on the internal communications network. And these are for those of you who aren't interested in management and supervisory work, because that, I avoided because I have no interest in herding cats and being in meetings all day. First, get your foot in the door. This may be a GS-1421-4/5 Archives Tech position. Something in the DC area is preferred because that's where most of the opportunities are, but GS-4/5 positions are plentiful in the St. Louis area and they are always hiring. Once you have 1 year under your belt, you are eligible to apply to merit and agency only positions that are GS-6/7 and maybe GS-9 positions. You might be able to get in at a higher grade, due to prior work experience or specialized skills. Unfortunately, I've seen too many MLS grads getting hired as GS-5s. Second, take advantage of cross-trainings and details. The agency has on-site and remote details that you'd have to apply to like a job. Cross-trainings, are a little easier to get, depending on your office's culture, and provide a quick tour through another department. Both provide experience with systems, people and offices. I've used work experience gained from cross-trainings and that one detail, in USAJobs application essays and later in job interviews. Sorta, kinda related to point number 2, bring up or keep up your skills. Know Excel/Google Sheets, Word, and some other office (and MS Office) software well enough that you are comfortable using them. Local public libraries should have this training available online or elsewhere. Volunteer work can count, and it is even better if that work used your professional skills. Lastly, because I need to bring this to a close, apply, apply, apply. Unless you know the super secret alternative paths to move up the career ladder, you're going to have to apply to the job you want. Applying over and over, gives you the practice of applying and honing your answers to those essay questions and later interview questions. It can be a numbers game. Keep plugging away until you get where you are going. If you can, apply in other geographic areas. Maybe you might need to leave the agency and become a lone-arranger for a couple of years, like I did. Find your goal, aim for it, and don't take your eye off of it.

I noticed several of my friends’ green #opentowork banners on their profiles. I spoke to one of them yesterday and asked how I could help and if there was anyone I could connect her with. She has been in the recruiting industry for 15 years and considered doing something different but didn’t know what. I asked her if she’d ever taken Holland’s Career Code Quiz and she had never heard of it. John L. Holland, a psychologist, created Holland's Career Theory, also known as the Holland Codes or RIASEC theory. His theory proposes that people can be categorized into six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC). He suggested that people seek careers that align with their personality types. According to this theory, a person's job satisfaction and success are higher when their work environment matches their personality type, allowing them to express themselves through their skills, interests, and values. Holland's theory has been widely used in career counseling and job coaching to help individuals understand themselves better and make informed career choices.
