Dubai’s wine scene is evolving significantly, attracting new consumers and enhancing its market position. Experts like Oliver Dixon from Le Clos - Finest Wines & Luxury Spirits and Younes Zarqoun of 111 MANAGEMENT Group highlight the impact of COVID-19, contributing to this growth with an influx of new restaurants averaging 130 openings annually. This has increased the demand for New World wines and specific champagnes. Despite higher prices, there’s also a rising interest in natural and organic wines. Restaurants in Dubai are adapting to wine trends, employing full-time sommeliers and adopting new pricing strategies. In France, the homeland of Gault&Millau, a restaurant’s wine offering is as integral to its success as its food. Traditionally, however, that hasn’t been the case in the UAE, where drinks lists have generally been viewed as second to produce and service. When we launched the Gault&Millau UAE Champagne Index in 2022, our mission was to change that. As the country’s fine dining scene continues evolving and gaining recognition as a global gastronomic hub, the dining experience is under increasing scrutiny. That means curating and developing a truly original non-alcoholic drinks selection in Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s unlicensed venues. In licensed venues, it means having a world-class wine list. Below, we have collated information regarding Champagne Vilmart & Cie and where you can find it in Dubai and the UAE. https://lnkd.in/dhhNnCf6

VINEXPO HONG KONG 2024: A FEW TAKEAWAYS #1 BORDEAUX AND WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A LEADER IN THE INDUSTRY One month ago, I had the opportunity to attend Vinexpo. You might think it's outdated information, but here's why I believe otherwise. - First, Vinexpo takes place every other year in Hong Kong, and this year it resumed after a six-year hiatus. - Second, despite the ever-changing business trends in our VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world, there are long-lived phenomena that offer valuable insights. Now, let's delve into my first takeaway. On May 28th, I attended the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting, showcasing the 2021 vintage. It was a truly unique opportunity to sample over 75 exceptional wines. Despite the weather challenges faced in 2021, the results are quite impressive. Contrary to the Bordeaux bashing we can hear or read here and there, this serves as further evidence that Bordeaux Grand Cru winemakers possess exceptional expertise in their craft. They demonstrate their ability to adapt to adverse climate conditions while maintaining consistency and outstanding quality. Furthermore, tasting a wide range of wines on the same occasion allows you to discern the influence of terroir and winemaking techniques on a wine's style. The pricing of Bordeaux Grand Crus has recently sparked controversy. However, it's important to remember that for some of these Châteaux, it's no longer just about the wine itself; it has become intertwined with notions of luxury and status. In French history, Napoleon III may not have left a favourable impression, but there is at least one thing for which we should give him credit: he commissioned the Bordeaux Grand Cru classification of 1855. The 1855 Classification and the Saint-Émilion Classification have fulfilled consumers' expectations in an ever more fragmented market by offering a concise list of top-quality products. Critics focus on these select names each year, refining the rankings with tasting notes, giving birth to iconic wines. Nevertheless, even these esteemed Châteaux must follow market trends. This year's « En Primeur » release signalled more reasonable pricing in line with the principles of supply and demand. Even before this, if we step away from the world of Grand Crus and luxury, it was already possible to find many Bordeaux Médoc and Haut-Médoc wines in Hong Kong at genuinely reasonable and competitive price points (even below $300, some below $200). These wines can undoubtedly satisfy the palates of many wine enthusiasts. Why such a stark difference? Because beyond the leading estates, numerous excellent Bordeaux wineries struggle with market conditions to establish themselves, create a renowned brand, and capture a broad consumer base. #Vinexpoasia #UniondesGrandsCrusdeBordeaux #WineHongKong

Premium or Luxury - what makes the difference? Part 2 Yesterday I finished with this question ... what makes these new "top wines" unique, or are they just better copies of the great classics? I think we have to categorize the world's most expensive wines in two chapters that may be able to present the topic in a more differentiated way Premium & Luxury wines What do both categories have in common? First of all, these wines are always extremely expensive, have the highest ratings from wine critics, are sought after worldwide and have a secondary market. As with all luxury products, there are winners and losers on this secondary market – and the Liv-Ex Index reflects this very well! And what distinguishes these two categories from each other? Luxury products are characterised by distinction, whereas premium products are characterised by their uniqueness and regional individuality. In my opinion these "great classics" are - the 1st growth from Bordeaux, Grand Crus from Burgundy, Barolo from Piemont, Champagne, Vintage Port and Trockenbeerenauslese from the Moselle valley. I would add the following regions as they have a premium reputation of more than 50 years - Napa Valley, Brunello di Montalcino, Hermitage & Côte Rotie and as single wines Sassicaia and Grange. In recent years, new premium wines have emerged that do not come from the classic regions, but fulfil all the characteristics of a premium wine – uniqueness, regionality, high ratings and the highest reputation in the target group! A very good example is the renaissance of top wines from the Loire – to name just Clos Rougeard – or the new dry premium wines from Germany, with the Keller winery and its G-Max at the top. But there is also good news for the "normal" wine drinker – premium wines are not only available in the top price segment! I would therefore like to expand the premium wines to include a category that could be called "new classics". These wineries come from regions with a long winemaking tradition, have a clear DNA, are highly rated internationally, but have remained relatively inexpensive. The Iberian peninsula, with a sea of outstanding premium wines, Austria with Blaufränkisch, Italy, especially with the renaissance of Chianti Classico and the wines from Mount Etna, are worthy of mention here. This category will certainly grow massively in the coming years, as more and more winemakers are reflecting on their origins and traditions and no longer emulating the "untouchables". We can look forward to discovering which regions are worth exploring!

Melbourne: A Lesser Known Wine Lover's Paradise The idea of lush vineyards and wine regions evokes in mind the sun-drenched hills of Tuscany and serene Bordeaux, or the elite wineries of the Napa Valley. Few are aware of Melbourne’s reputation as a wine lover's paradise. Here are some compelling reasons why Melbourne is a significant pitstop for wine lovers. Proximity to world-class wine regions: The city is surrounded by renowned wine-producing regions, such as the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, and Macedon Ranges. This proximity makes it easy to visit multiple wineries and vineyards in a short period. Diverse wine styles: Melbourne's wine regions produce a wide variety of wine styles, from classic Australian varieties like Shiraz and Chardonnay to more experimental blends. This diversity ensures there's something to suit every palate. Sophisticated wine culture: Melbourne has a sophisticated wine culture, with numerous wine bars, restaurants, and speciality shops dedicated to showcasing the best of Australian wines. Wine festivals and events: Throughout the year, Melbourne hosts various wine festivals and events, providing opportunities to sample new wines, learn about winemaking techniques, and meet winemakers. Beautiful scenery: The wine regions surrounding Melbourne offer stunning scenery, including rolling hills, vineyards, and charming towns. This makes wine tasting a delightful sensory experience. These factors combined make Melbourne an ideal destination for wine enthusiasts seeking a memorable and sophisticated wine-tasting experience. For those who have never gone wine tasting before, keep these pointers in mind to make the most of your wine-tasting experience. -- Start with lighter wines: Begin with white wines or sparkling wines before moving on to red wines. -- Swirl the wine: This aerates the wine and releases its aromas. -- Take a deep breath: Inhale the wine's aroma before taking a sip. --- Taste the wine: Pay attention to the flavours, tannins, acidity, and sweetness. -- Spit or swallow: If you're tasting multiple wines, it's a good idea to spit most of the wine out to avoid getting too intoxicated. Bolgheri 2024 Tasting Report: Nurturing A Local Vibe (Part I) It’s been 38 years since I first traveled to Bolgheri to report on a new winery, Ornellaia, that is now one of the leading names in this coastal region of Tuscany, and I have had a soft spot ever since for the wines from the area, especially the reds. Comparisons of the reds of Bolgheri to Bordeaux and Napa Valley have been made because of the region’s reliance on similar grape varietals, mostly cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. But I don’t think that such comparisons are fair considering the unique climate and position of Bolgheri, with vineyards so close to the Mediterranean Sea and its pristine hillsides of maritime trees and brush. This unique ecosystem definitely gives the reds a cool and lightly herbaceous character that comes through in so many wines, including hints of fresh sage, rosemary and mint. Moreover, Bolgheri generally doesn’t make reds with the restrained character of Bordeaux in most vintages or the more overt personality of Napa reds, particularly cabernet sauvignon. The intrinsic character of Bolgheri wines today is clearly evident to tasters and drinkers, as many local winemakers seem to be cutting back on the late picking of their grapes and higher-alcohol wines as well as highly extractive fermentations and macerations. New wood barrels and casks for aging their wines are also on the decline. Senior Editor Aldo Fiordelli and I came to these conclusions and others at the end of July in Bolgheri during a tasting of almost 200 wines, mostly from the 2021 and 2022 vintages. As expected, there are some terrific wines we rated from 2021, a cooler and later harvest than many recent years. The top wines have sleek and structured palates and plenty of blue fruits and freshness thanks to the harvesting of grapes in October. Most winemakers in Bolgheri prefer 2021 to most other recent vintages. “It was a longer growing season, so it gave the vines time to develop the aromas and tannins in our reds,” commented Luca d’Attoma, the consulting enologist for Bolgheri estate Poggio Al Tesoro - Allegrini as well as many other wineries around Tuscany.
