🚀 Flashes from the #Biomethaverse Pilot Sites: where innovations in biomethane are taking shape. 🔹 France: The ENGIE BiOZ pilot site has moved to Coëvrons Mayenne, offering similar specifications to the original Eppeville site. Covering 2.6 hectares, it produces 2 million m³ of CH4 annually and has a capacity of 21 GWh, enough renewable gas to supply 1,900 homes, with up to 220 Nm³/h injected into the grid. 🔹 Italy: Significant advancements were made in the Italian case study with the completion of the ozonolysis plant installation. This includes a 12 m³ liquid oxygen tank, an ozone generator, and, most importantly, the contact reactor, where sludge and ozone will interact to enhance methane production. 🔹 Greece: The Greek demo is making significant progress in optimizing its biogas-to-biomethane conversion technology. The team is currently focussing on refining the reactor’s design, a key component in ensuring the effective upgrading of raw biogas into high-purity biomethane. The reactor serves as the core of the demo, where biogas undergoes a three-step thermocatalytic methanation process. 🔹 Sweden: In Höganäs, the Swedish demo plant has begun long-term trials on biological methanation of syngas from biomass gasification. A key collaboration between Wätsilä and RISE has made this possible. 🔹 Ukraine: The war has severely impacted the Ukrainian biogas sector. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, 17 GW of Ukrainian power generation has remained occupied. Beginning in March 2024, an additional 9 GW have been damaged or completely destroyed. Stay tuned for more updates from the Biomethaverse project! https://lnkd.in/eync7yNH #biomethane #sustainable #innovation ISINNOVA - Research Innovation Sustainability ENEA UABio Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) RISE Research Institutes of Sweden Cortus Energy AB (CE) Wärtsilä Lab Crigen AERIS Tecnologias Ambientales SL Leitat Technological Center FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Gruppo CAP Energigas Sverige Politecnico di Milano SIAD S.p.A. Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) and Capsol Technologies ASA (Capsol) announce a carbon capture demonstration campaign at Swedish Mälarenergi AB’s combined heat and power (bio-CHP) plant in Västerås, Sweden. The demonstration unit will commence operations in November 2024 as part of a rental agreement between SFW and Capsol. Mälarenergi and SFW have signed an agreement under which SFW will provide a mobile carbon capture demonstration facility and Mälarenergi will host the corresponding operation activities at their biomass plant in Västerås, Sweden. The mobile carbon capture unit, delivered by Capsol, is based on the Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) process, incorporating the patented EoP® heat recovery technology by Capsol. "Carbon capture has great potential to counteract the climate crisis. What we need to move forward with our investigative work is plant-specific knowledge of how the technology can be applied to the combined heat and power plant in Västerås, in the most resource-efficient and optimal way possible. That is what we are now going to investigate, practically and on site," says Niklas Gunnar, CEO of Mälarenergi. The demonstration campaign will provide valuable data on the performance of the technical solution for Mälarenergi’s specific flue gas conditions that can be used in optimizing the planned full-scale capture plant at Mälarenergi, which will reduce emissions by approximately 400,000 tons of CO2 each year. Great news, we are piloting syngas methanation in Sweden! Q Power, Cortus Energy AB (CE), the gasification technology supplier, and Biokraft one of the leading biogas producers in the Nordic countries, have joined forces in the Synferm project organized by the Baltic Energy Innovation Center (BEIC). During this project, we will carry out a pilot in which biomethane is refined from synthesis gas i.e. syngas from gasified wood material in Q Power's bioreactor. Syngas is produced from for example logging waste using Cortus WoodRoll® technology. Our aim is to broaden the raw material base for biomethane production. Q Powers biological methanation is highly tolerant to impurities so it is possible to utilize different kind of gases as a source for producing renewable synthetic methane. Synthesis gas or syngas is a mix of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). It can be turned into biofuels by using a biological fermentation process. In this process, microorganisms convert carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases into organic molecules through metabolic pathways. Syngas fermentation offers an environmentally friendly path for utilizing waste gases as raw material. #Syngas #biogas #biofuel #efuels #climateaction #gas #methanation

This is one great example of what biological methanation is capable to do. Q Powers bioreactors are extremely tolerant to impurities, which mean that we can utilize different kind of carbonous gases as a feed stock in our methanation. In this pilot we are utilizing syngas gasified from wood material by Cortus Energy AB (CE) WoodRoll technology. #syngas #synthesisgas #biogas #biofuels

🌱 Innovative membrane processes for the reduction of fossil fuels in bioethanol production As part of the #MemFermOL project, we are working with our partners to significantly reduce energy consumption in the production of bioethanol. The conventional bioethanol production process is very energy-intensive, as it is based on thermally driven distillation processes that currently mainly use fossil fuels such as natural gas. 📌 The aim of the project is to replace these energy-intensive distillation steps with innovative membrane processes. This technology makes it possible to save up to 80 % of the energy required and thus drastically improve the energy balance of bioethanol production. At a time when the reduction of CO2 emissions and independence from fossil fuels are more important than ever, the MemFermOL project is making a decisive contribution to a sustainable energy future. Together, we are working to make the production of biofuels more efficient and environmentally friendly. To achieve our goals, we have joined forces with Nordbrand GmbH and Fraunhofer IKTS in the MemFermOL project, using their specialist knowledge and expertise to establish a membrane-based, energy-saving process chain for the production of technical bioethanol from renewable raw materials. 🤝 The project, which was funded by the State of Thuringia, was co-financed by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). #Sustainability #Bioethanol #Energytransition #Innovation #Membrane technology #CO2reduction #MemFermOL
