Six weeks ago, I applied for a role titled “Lead Data Specialist.” My skills were a great match for the job. I have extensive experience in data analysis and management, and demonstrated relevant industry experience. I ticked every box for education, experience, and skills. My resume highlights my relevant experience and accomplishments. However, I received a standard rejection email one week after applying. Today, I note a job with the same company, titled “Associate Manager, Data Specialist.” Reading through the job description, it sounds like an excellent fit for me so, undeterred, I submit my application. Upon doing so, however, I receive a popup that I have already applied for that position. That’s odd, I think to myself, going back through my meticulous notes of months upon months of job applications. Nope, no application for Associate Manager with said company. Huh. I’m really curious employer, six weeks later, with all of the available talent out there, you can’t find a qualified lead data specialist? So you repost it with a new title. Are you guys kidding me? Take a look at my resume. Take a look at any of the hundreds of resumes you received. Stop asking for candidates with "longevity on their CV" 🤦♂️ Especially for project-based roles in data centre and pharma construction. Project-based roles typically guarantee only 1-2 years of work. Why would you expect the candidates for your roles to have stayed longer than this at each of their previous roles if that’s all you can offer them?! If you're hiring for long-term, office or region-based roles, sure, look for longevity. But for a 1-2 year project, asking for more is unrealistic. If you get someone who's going to stay with your from project to project - awesome! But don't expect that everyone will do this, and if you can't guarantee continuity of work then don't expect people with a history of staying with one company to apply. I receive a ton of messages weekly asking me if I am hiring for Sr. Data Engineers or other positions that aren't relevant to my industry.
