Year after year, there are fewer registered charities in Canada. Recently, researcher Don McRae analyzed data in our sector to identify four trends related to the registration of new charities and the revocations of old registered charities in Canada in 2023. He finds that Christian charities are continuing to close down in large numbers, and that more arts charities and volunteer-run charities are shutting down. Also, pandemic restrictions from the past are still playing out with charities by stopping or severely limiting charities’ revenue generation. Last, he shows that while the number of private foundations rises, the number of public foundations continues to fall. Read the full story on PANL Perspectives: https://lnkd.in/g8ErdQ5C

Over two decades of dedicated experience, I excel in providing comprehensive administrative and project management support, and successful collaboration with diverse audiences to achieve organizational goals efficiently.
The trend from previous years continued in 2023 with the number of foundations increasing to 13.5% of all registered charities in Canada — for a total of 11,550 private and public foundations. Also, last year, the number of private foundations in Canada continued to grow (to 6,770 private foundations), while the number of public foundations continued to fall (to 4,780 public foundations).

Greek Philosopher Heraclitus lived from 535-475BC. He believed in the constant state of change. Heraclitus’s most well known expression “no man steps in the same river twice”. That quote will be a post at some point. He also discussed the need for opposites to exist something similar to a yin and yang like theory. This quote is true and I embrace change. Even the vast mountains and everything we see will one day erode. It took me a very long time to be willing to change. It wasn’t until I realized that something new was my only option to survive. Change can be scary even when it’s a good thing. I remember when my son first started kindergarten. Clearly that is a good thing, but I was terrified. What would I do with myself? Will I be lonely? What if I relapse? Most of the thought centered around me and that is much of my problem. Instead of fighting change, I will be that inevitable change-jg Please Sign Up for Monthly Donations On Our Website https://lnkd.in/drhS6dyf Email Us. found this an interesting report on the charitable sector in Canada. Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but fascinating to me. Items of note: - we are losing charities and this is expected to continue for a few more years, at least. - private foundations are increasing. Which suggests greater concentration of wealth. This will reduce the amount of money available as private foundations are notorious for accumulating wealth, not distributing it. - Pandemic had a significant impact on the arts. We are losing opportunities to create. With the continued funding challenge within the school system, the arts sector has been an important place for children and adults to explore and discover new ways of self-expression. We are losing opportunities to play, and to be engaged by the arts. - Christian churches are closing. Now for some, you may welcome this, as churches haven't always been healthy places. I get that. I do believe this is a significant loss for our country, however, as churches have played a major role in community building. And with the churches closing, their food banks, camps, rec centres, social services also close. Other religious groups are growing, but not at an equivalent rate. And so far, no groups or activities are emerging to replace the social capital lost from absence of churches within communities. I will be interested to see if something does rise up to help with the building of social cohesion or if we continue to fracture. I don't think the decline in churches is solely responsible but see it as a significant factor. Thoughts?
