Mental Health Awareness Month is observed annually in May to raise awareness and educate the public about mental health issues, promote mental wellness, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health disorders.
Social workers are uniquely positioned to provide education and awareness during this time. There are more clinically trained social workers than in the United States than psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurse practitioners combined!
But even as we are the leading group of mental health practitioners, this is also a reminder to tend to our own mental health as well. The nature of our work, though fulfilling, can wear on our mental.
Remember, you are worthy of the same tender care, kindness, and wellness that you offer to your clients, and if you are not well, you cannot support others in being well.
