As a brain aneurysm survivor, I advocate for funding for awareness, research, and education about brain aneurysms. I was one of the 50% affected by a brain aneurysm who survived it, and I am one of the one third of those survivors who are not impacted by cognitive or physical challenges as a result of a ruptured brain aneurysm. I'm a survivor today because of brain aneurysm research, and innovations in treatment and prevention. I had a two-step brain surgery to "sacrifice" my very large, and unusual aneurysm, in an uncommon location. My surgery was not common; my very experienced neurovascular surgeon had only seen, and operated on, five cases like mine. Thank God for the research done by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. NO ONE should ever die as a result of a brain aneurysm. I live for that day and will do what I can to help reach that goal. When faced with a child who is called autistic, but is also overweight, rashy, hyperactive, can't sleep, and has trouble passing stool, how should this child be properly evaluated? This case presentation will demonstrate the essentials of a complete history, physical exam, lab work, and environmental investigation in order to properly diagnose and treat the child. It will also demonstrate how the child can improve clinically based on an appropriate treatment plan. Excited to get this one accepted! I wrote a narrative review on the relationship between neurocognitive performance & lower extremity injury. A particular focus on the potential cerebral mechanisms underpinning this relationship, largely stemming from visual processing having downstream effects such as slower reaction time and inaccurate trajectory estimation. This leads to a delayed neuromuscular response that increases load on lower extremity structures. Remember, non-contact injuries occur due to strict spatio-temporal constraints. The ability to assess and train neurocognitive performance represents an important next step in comprehensive risk reduction interventions.

Advancing Visual Injury Research at #AAO2024! This week, NAEVR partnered with the DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) Vision Research Program to lead a Modeling Visual Injury Special Interest Group Planning Committee Kickoff Meeting. This critical meeting brought together experts to address the urgent need for research into visual injuries, particularly those related to wartime and combat situations. Visual injuries sustained in the field are a significant and often under-researched challenge for service members and veterans, requiring advanced clinical and basic science research to develop better treatments and recovery solutions. Discussions during the meeting focused on creating a white paper to guide future research, outlining the current clinical knowledge gaps, limitations in existing animal models, and opportunities to improve understanding of visual trauma. This initiative is a crucial step toward enhancing research efforts that aim to protect and restore vision, particularly for those impacted by combat-related visual injuries. We look forward to sharing the next steps in this important initiative!
