West Point military academy drops 'Duty, Honor, Country' from mission statement Our responsibility to produce leaders to fight and win our nation's wars requires us to assess ourselves regularly." Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland Steve Gilland https://lnkd.in/gFKCAQAG Duty, Honor, Country defines the underlying purpose of the what, how and for whom of the USMA. If not, why then the #USMA? There are several much less expensive alternatives, LTG; namely ROTC. Curricular adjustments can be made. The definition of #duty is a moral or legal obligation; a responsibility. The definition of #honor is high respect; esteem. #Country indicates that the primary duty of soldiers is to serve and protect the nation. A core component of mission. Duty, Honor, Country More than a motto. A core component of mission. The USMA's raison d'etre. But that is only part of the story. There is more. Who: cadets (in whom) How: Building capacity to lead When: four-year leader development program Where: West Point, NY Why: contribute to the country's defense Put it all together and what do we have? A bonafide mission. The mission of the United States Military Academy is to build within cadets throughout a four-year, continuously assessed, leader development program at West Point, NY, the capacity to lead others with honor, as a duty to contribute to the defense of the United States of America. Twas thus, and evermore. No change or wordsmithing required. Don't change that which is not broken. #westpoint #military #defense #unitedstatesofamerica #usarmy #usa

Retired Marine and former Corporate leader. I tell stories of my corporate life to help others better understand the true culture of large corporations.
Simple or Complex The Corporate vs Military Version Corporate America: Simple-One train arriving at the train station every hour Complex- Two trains arriving at the train station every hour. U.S. Military: Simple-arriving to work on time. Complex-Coordinating 4 platoons movements while simultaneously coordinating air power, artillery, mortars and replenishment. One of the big lies in corporate America is telling you that it's harder than it looks. It is not hard and it's not complex if you've had even a small amount of operational planning training. Not only is leadership not taught but neither is planning. Sadly, I've watched a dozen managers fail because they were unable to plan for two trains arriving at the same time. Every 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps is taught planning before they arrive to the fleet and attend numerous schools throughout their career. #veteranshelpingveterans #veterans #leadership #leaders #marines

In 2002, 56 years after the establishment of the National War College and Armed Forces Staff College and 16 years following the enactment of the Goldwater-Nichols Act, General Richard Myers, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the time, issued a directive to the Joint Staff: “[We must] expand and improve JPME to develop trust amongst the services, ensure service integration, develop transformational leaders, capable of working with other agencies and services, incorporate observations from recent operations, and educate and train the right person for the right task at the right time.” Two years later, in 2004, the CJCS established the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) as a Top-Level School (TLS) / Senior Service College (SSC) with a curriculum mirroring the operational warfighting character of the prized Service Advanced Warfighting Schools (AWS) like SAMS, SAW, SAASS, and NOPC, but with a distinctively Joint focus. Today, after 20 years of Joint Professional Military Education excellence in Joint Warfighting, our mission remains to “prepare U.S. and international military officers and U.S. Government civilians to serve in strategic leadership positions and lead the development of theater strategies, campaigns, and operations for the employment of joint forces in support of strategic objectives and policy goals.“ JAWS exists to produce the graduates Combatant Commanders require: Historically-Informed, Strategically-Minded, Joint Warfighters. This LinkedIn page exists to help JAWS faculty, staff, and students - past, present, and future - to connect, engage, and tell our story.

Today we celebrate the service and leadership of Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon as he retires from military service and relinquishes his role as the U.S. Army’s 55th Chief of Engineers and commanding officer of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). During his tenure as Chief, Spellmon was a champion of innovation and sought to elevate the story of research and development in USACE and beyond. Under his leadership, investment in R&D quadrupled, and he took the lead in telling the story of R&D in several forums, including testifying before Congress 20 times about the importance of and need for more R&D. To learn more about Spellmon’s nearly four decades of service in the U.S. Army and his impact to USACE, visit https://lnkd.in/edURV-d9. “Professional military education (PME) is a critically important part of building effective military leaders. This fact is sometimes overlooked due to the misguided belief that experience and field service alone will make the best leader.” For new Air Force and Space Force officers think about how and when you will accomplish the following: Masters Degree Squadron Officer School Air Command & Staff College Air War College Joint PME, like the Joint and Combined War fighting School It’s not about “checking the box.” It’s about continually learning and becoming a better person for yourself and all those you work with.

Leadership Thoughts for Pride Month There has been a lot of backlash lately about a Navy Special Warfare Command (i.e., SEALs) Facebook post that featured the words, "NSW DIGNITY SERVICE RESPECT EQUALITY PRIDE" on a rainbow flag. Considering the "team" mentality of NSWG, I am surprised that the current NSWG leadership endorses this approach. The problem with this post is not the Navy's position on LGBTQIA+ sailors, but rather, it the the fact that we recognize them as a distinct group. This flies in the face of every aspect of our military and Navy training. We are taught and trained to look past our differences and focus on our mission. We function best as a team, not as individuals. We seek values that unite us, not divide us. HONOR. COURAGE. COMMITMENT. Those are the Navy's core values and our focus. We must not divide ourselves by heritage, education, politics, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Celebrating any grouping of servicemembers is divisive and only serves to weaken our team. When building a successful team, focus on the values that unite; not those which divide. #NAVY #CNO #NSWG #SEALS #LEADERSHIP #NAVYSPECIALWARFARE #MILITARY #PAO #PUBLICAFFAIRS #NAVYPUBLICAFFAIRS #KEITHDAVIDS #ANDYSCHREINER #DAVIDMARKLE #WALTERDITTMAR
