Next week is National Care Leavers Week, and as someone who’s lived it, here’s 3 skills being a care leaver taught me about business: 1.Adaptability – Growing up in the care system, I learned to handle change. That skill helped me run two successful street food businesses employ other care leavers and lead a six-figure property development project whilst leaving school with no GCSE’s and being neurodiverse 2.Resilience – I had a heart attack at 21 and two eye surgeries for cataracts ,lost my mother to pneumonia faced homelessness at 18, but I didn’t quit. Care leavers know how to fight back—stronger every time. 3.Resourcefulness – Starting with nothing teaches you to make things happen with what you’ve got. That’s been my advantage in business. Reading the first evaluation report about Welsh Govt’s Universal Basic Income Pilot for care leavers. Love this line from Mark Drakeford from when the pilot launched, that basic income would give young people the ability to “decide how they want to experience life as they make the transition to adulthood.” Delivering the Care Leaver Covenant we’re constantly wrestling with the idea that we’re helping care leavers to become ‘independent’. How many of us are completely independent at 21 or 25? Why would we aspire to that for our care leavers? Drakeford’s line captures perfectly what we should be aiming for: agency and opportunity rather than independence.  #diversityandinclusion #socialimpact

The United States may be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but if the greatness of a nation is measured by how it treats its elders, we might not rank as highly. As of 2021, 16.8% of our population is 65 and older, and 25.2% are between 45 and 64 years old. This means that approximately 25% of our population is likely part of the “sandwiched group” of caregivers, balancing work and family responsibilities. This 25% represents a significant portion of our workforce whose productivity is heavily impacted by caregiving duties. Supporting and funding programs to alleviate the stress and burdens on caregivers is not only an economic imperative but also a moral obligation. But if there is a will, there will be solutionS. We all know how hard it can be for young people, but for some it is disproportionately more difficult. Care leavers in particular are at a massive disadvantage. They can go from being supported to being out on their own, on a massively reduced income, and without the family support that so many young people take for granted and rely on. There are many shocking statistics around care leavers, but one of them highlights the difficulties that they face. 20% of care leavers will go on to spend at least some time in prison, whereas only 6% will go on to university. Of course, not everything is about university or formal education, but the difference in trajectory, and the increased likelihood of hardship is stark. We want to change their future. Carers NSW welcomes the release of the report on the Federal inquiry into carer recognition; Recognising, valuing and supporting unpaid carers. Carers NSW was pleased to see the Committee overseeing the inquiry acknowledge that there is a need to strengthen the Commonwealth Carer Recognition Act 2010 and create greater accountability to achieve true carer recognition. The Committee made 22 recommendations, including: - Proposed changes to the Act to expand the definition and create greater accountability for public service agencies, - Further exploration of the establishment of enforceable rights for carers through legislation - Improving access to and effectiveness of support for carers, - Proposed priority areas for the forthcoming National Carer Strategy - Better addressing the financial impacts of caring You can read the report at: https://lnkd.in/gCgad3nU

Caring for our most vulnerable children is perhaps the most crucial role of local authorities. Yet, they face a myriad of challenges in children's residential care, including rising demand, lack of supply in the right places, and a market reliant on debt-financed business models driven by scale. These factors are leading to poor outcomes for children.
