  • BLOG I Following the exciting news that BBC Radio1's Big Weekend is heading to Liverpool in May, Liverpool's Director of Culture Claire McColgan CBE, looks at the importance of staging these major events and what it means for the City and the local music industry: Over the last few years Liverpool has cemented its reputation as the city for major music events. In 2023 we hosted the biggest and best ever Eurovision. Last year we captured the attention of the world with our Taylor Town extravaganza on the back of Taylor Swift choosing Liverpool for her only English dates outside of London. In the summer we have Bruce Springsteen and Dua Lipa bringing their musical magic to the city, and let’s not forget we are lucky enough to have an incredible existing programme of annual music events which we love in the city such as On The waterfront and Sound City. So, it's safe to say we are delighted to be adding to that stellar line-up, and are so excited that the BBC is bringing one of its flagship festivals - Radio 1 Big Weekend - to Liverpool in May. Taking place in the gorgeous surroundings of Sefton Park between 23 and 25 May the event will bring big names, musical stardust and glamour to the city for one glorious weekend. It will also play an important part in Liverpool’s UN Accelerator City programme – a pioneering initiative that sees the city trial innovative ways to rapidly decarbonise the live music and TV/film industry. When it comes to Big Weekend, the City Council will work closely with the BBC to see where changes and improvements can be made to make the whole production as environmentally friendly as possible. The benefit of hosting these huge events is multi-layered. It confirms Liverpool’s status as a music and also showcases the incredible talent that is consistently emerging from the City... • #News: The search for a new development partner for Liverpool's iconic #FestivalGardens scheme is set to move up a gear. Liverpool City Council and Montagu Evans has announced that shortlisted candidates will be confirmed in Spring this year. Following the launch of this unique opportunity in October 2024, dialogue is ongoing with a number of high-calibre parties who are expected to shortly return Outline Solutions. An invitation to shortlisted parties will be issued in March, and the selection of a preferred bidder remains on track for September. £53m has already been invested into the prime waterfront site and surrounding area to de-risk and accelerate delivery on this remediated brownfield land. Remediation and infrastructure installation has been completed by VINCI which also led to the creation of Liverpool’s first public park of the century. Part of a wider 36 ha site, Festival Gardens’ Development Zone extends to 11 ha (27 acres), 5 km from Liverpool city centre. Its landmark waterfront location benefits from outstanding green and blue infrastructure with the Festival Gardens parkland, including formal Chinese and Japanese gardens, and River Mersey immediately adjacent. The Development Zone will become a thriving, sustainable, healthy and inclusive neighbourhood with a strong identity and sense of community, developed using innovative design and building techniques to meet local housing need. Councillor Nick Small, Liverpool Council’s Cabinet member for Economy and Growth, said: “The Festival Gardens development zone is a once in a generation opportunity and we’re keen to ensure a scheme that befits its amazing location. "We’ve had some very positive conversations with a number of high-quality developers and we now look forward to seeing their visions in detail on they seek to transform the housing offer in this area. “We’re entering an incredibly exciting time and the shortlisting of candidates this Spring is a huge step in making this in-demand, thriving community a reality." • Liverpool City Council’s Children and Young People’s Services has received positive feedback from Ofsted following their latest monitoring visit. Over two days in December 2024, inspectors focused on the Care Leaving Service and the lives of care-experienced young people, particularly those receiving support in care and transitioning to adulthood. Inspectors also spoke directly to care-experienced young people to hear their views firsthand. Full report here: https://lnkd.in/emhtKNMV Ofted praised the “enthusiasm” and “tenacity” of staff in building relationships and providing support to care-experienced young people and recognised that increased capacity, with additional managers and personal advisors, has resulted in more manageable caseloads. Inspectors also found strong evidence of support being offered to young people, including young parents, those in custody, and those in temporary accommodation. Other findings: Personal advisors are now being allocated before young people turn 18, some as early as 17 ½. Young people reported feeling safe and supported in their accommodation. The ‘local offer’ for care-experienced young people has been developed and is now accessible. Strengthened efforts to support young people at risk of becoming Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) reflect the commitment of multiple agencies. While inspectors recognised the progress made, they also identified areas for further development including: Pathway planning and the roles of social workers, carers, and independent reviewing officers need to strengthened to better prepare young people for adulthood. Improved coordination is needed to ensure clarity in who is responsible for supporting young people through their transitions and how this support is delivered. Cllr Liz Parsons, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “The positive feedback from Ofsted’s is to be warmly welcomed and reflects the huge amount of work going on to improve services for young children in our care. “This report aligns with our own assessment, affirming that Liverpool is heading in the right direction. While there is still work to be done, the latest visit confirms that the steps we are taking are making a real difference. “We want to thank the young people who shared their experiences with inspectors and the incredible teams who worked tirelessly during this visit. This progress is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and teamwork.” Jenny Turnross, Corporate Director for Children and Young People’s Services, said: “As a service, we remain committed to driving further improvements to ensure that Liverpool’s care-experienced young people receive the support they need to thrive. “Together, we are building a better future for all children and young people in Liverpool.” Liz Parsons | Lila Bennett | Jenny Turnross | Matthew Ashton | Anne Marie Lubanski | Jacqui McKinlay | Camilla Mankabady | Nuala Gallagher
