The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the proposed Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) to address lead in drinking water. The rule builds on the existing Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) by introducing new requirements for water systems in the U.S., including: 💧 Replace all lead service lines in 10 years 💧 Identify unknown service line materials and validate non-lead service lines 💧 Add 1st and 5th liter sampling for tier 1-3, highest of two is used for compliance 💧 Remove trigger level and lower action level from 15 µg/L to 10 µg/L 💧 Provide additional communications and new filter requirements to all customers if multiple action level exceedances occur The proposed rule is subject to a 60 day public comment period and the EPA will also hold an informational webinar on December 6 from 12-1 pm MST. The EPA anticipates finalizing the LCRI by October 16, 2024. The LCRI introduces significant enhancements to the existing Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, including a mandatory 10-year replacement requirement for identified lead service lines, continuous verification of unknown service lines, and a lowered action level exceedance to 10ppb.
