🚧Breaking ground in 2025! California American Water is continuing the design-build of a new desalination facility as part of the utility’s Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project (MPWSP) in Monterey, CA. This plant will initially produce 4.8 mgd of drinking water to provide drought protection and an alternative, sustainable supply to replace surface water from the Carmel River. The plant will feature innovative slant-well technology, pressure filter pre-treatment, single pass seawater (high pressure) reverse osmosis with pressure exchanger energy recovery, partial second pass brackish water (low pressure) reverse osmosis, mineralization, disinfection, and corrosion control. CDM Smith is the design-builder for the project with early construction activities to start in 2025 and plant start-up expected in 2028. Design-build delivery was chosen for the facility to expedite the project schedule, streamline administrative processes and guarantee costs. Backed by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, this initiative delivered 100+ sustainability projects aimed at long-term impact. ⚡ From land-use management to eco-tourism, forestry, and renewable energy, the program also saw the successful design and construction of 10 clean energy projects. Solar panel installations in schools and neighborhoods now power over 700 households across the islands. 👷 "We overcame program challenges and achieved successful outcomes thanks to the teamwork and dedication of our large and diverse team and made Green Prosperity a reality," said David Spector, vice president and team leader.
